Jen's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

October 7, 1999

I had a great bike ride into work today. I have to drop Jason off before 8:00 a.m., preferably by 7:45 a.m., so that means that I need to leave the house by 7:00 a.m. As I rode off this morning I could still see the morning star, bright in the sky, and as I crested the first big hill, the sun was just coming up over the horizon, setting the tops of the trees ablaze with this amazing orange-gold light. Wow.

Trailer Tuesday was pretty spectacular, too -- the crescent moon was just above, and to the left of the morning star, and to me it evoked the mystical feeling of an imam waiting for the first day of Ramadan. Everything was still, cold and quiet, but there was that feeling of anticipation that only a new day brings.

It took a while for Jason to get used to the trailer when we bought it. I was beginning to fear that, after almost two years of missing my rides, I would never be able to bike again. He was one of those babies who decided at seven months old that hats would no longer be part of his wardrobe, so you can imagine how well he liked the little bike helmet I have for him.

Nowadays, though, he only launches a token protest squawk as I put it on, and then once he's tested it for any possibility of removal, he settles down. Most times, he falls asleep in the trailer as I ride on. If he doesn't, there's a rattle and some other toys in the trailer that I'll hear jingling in rhythm with the ruts in the road.
