Give me strength! Jason is teething again, and is having such a difficult time with it. And here I thought he was all done for a while. He's so cranky right now -- he doesn't want to be held, but god forbid Steve or I be more than 3 feet away. He's been back in bed with us for the past couple of nights, just because he sleeps better if he can reach out and touch us. He doesn't seem to wake up fully unless he reaches around and we're not there.
The irony is that he has the worst time with teething well before anything pops through -- it's just when the teeth begin their journey that he has problems. He's not due for another set of molars until he's 3, and he's always teethed a little behind average. Part of what's hard on him is that he has a very strong inflammation response to teething. His temperature spikes up to 103-104, he soaks through 3-4 shirts in a day, and when it's molars, his nose could run a marathon.
It's weird, because it's not that different from when he has a cold, but there are subtle differences that let me in on the real story. 1) His nose runs clear, and there aren't scary goblins emerging from his nostrils. 2) He's cranky, but not in the same way as when he's sick. 3) He's not as active as normal, but it's more because he wants to be with us rather than because he's tired.
I suppose if I took him into a doctor's office, they'd say he has a cold, but maybe you just have to be around he on a regular basis to tell the difference. I wish he didn't have so much trouble with it -- I thought it was only supposed to be the first few that were so much effort!
One thing I'm finding this time around is that I don't have as much patience with him as I have in the past. Part of that is because I'm pregnant, and it's much harder to deal with the sleep interruptions that come with this. The other part is that I feel like we should be past this already, and it's almost a disappointment that it's still an issue. Of all the kids I've seen grow up, teething really seems to have a bigger impact on him, but I kind of expected that after he got his first set of molars, that the rest wouldn't be so traumatic. His eye teeth came in without much fuss, so maybe I lulled myself into a false sense of security. It's just hard to deal with a little guy who's obviously uncomfortable and unhappy, and not really be able to do anything to help.
