06/05/00We're back! Jason did really well on the trip -- much better than I was expecting from a toddler being schlepped all over the place. The only part of the trip he didn't enjoy was when we were in Texas and it was over 90 degrees and 60 percent humidity. Yuck! He's never really liked the heat, and this time around was no exception.
We did have one unexpected challenge on the trip -- we used his car seat on the plane, which pushed him far enough forward that when he bounced his feet, he'd kick the chair ahead of him. I'm sure that wasn't too much fun for the passenger in that seat. We did the best we could, and I think those close to us could probably recite our little mantra of "Jason, put your feet down!" and "Jason, no kicking!" Still, some kicks did manage to get through. Oh, well, we tried.
He's also started talking a lot more since we started our vacation. When we started out, he would sign for "please," then he started to say the word itself on occasion, and now he hardly ever signs. It wasn't something we pushed, or even really encouraged, just something he started on his own.
What's amazing to me is how much Jason comprehends now. He still doesn't have a very large vocabulary, but there's enough that we can have limited conversations. He's even starting to put together short, 3-4 word sentences -- though to be perfectly truthful, that's only happened on a couple of occasions.
The morning sickness has finally begun to abate to tolerable levels, and I'm feeling like I can be a mommy again. I feel like I've felt so awful for so long (and it was only for about 8 weeks!), that I haven't had the energy to devote as much time and attention to Jason as I'd like. Now that I'm more myself, we're doing a lot more together, and I think he's enjoying it. While I was "out" he became a total daddy's boy, but since I've been more accessible, he comes to me as often as he does to Steve. It's nice, because I really have missed him.
He turns 2 years old on the 9th of this month, and I have a hard time believing that so much time has passed already. I was looking through some of his baby pictures and was stunned at how much he's changed. What's amazing to me is that the gap between newborn and the 1st year is much more significant that this past year. If I look at the pictures of Jason the day he was born, I would be hard pressed to say that it's the infant who turned into my toddler. By his last birthday, his features are recognizably his own. I wonder what the next year will bring?
