Janis's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

January 16, 2004

Hi Eveyone,
Sorry it's been so long since my last post, but we got a new computer and I had my password programed in. When I hooked up my new computer, the password was lost, so I had to wait until it was emailed to me!
Well anyway our Christmas was very nice. All of the kids were very happy with all of their presents. Kayla couldn't get over the fact that she could rip paper and there would be a toy in there for her. She just thought that was the best thing ever invented. Her birthday is coming up, so now that she gets the idea of presents, this should be adorable. After we opened the presents, The kids all got in their Christmas outfits and we went to my Aunts for dinner, and an adult pollyanna, which was also fun.
Our New Year's eve was very quiet. We popped in Lion King, and were all asleep in the living Room by 10:30. Now I know I'm getting old!!!
We're planning Kayla's birthday party for next Saturday and I can't wait, it will be so much fun. It's for her, her brother Andrew, who will be six on Tuesday, and her cousin. Hopefully they will all have alot of fun!
Well now to the unpleasant part. Kayla had an accident on Tuesday that was the scariest thing I have ever been through.I was on the bus when I recieve a phone call from Thomas, my fourteen year old. Kayla was hysterical crying in the background. Thomas told me that Kayla was watching Barney in her room and he heard a bang. Apparentally the movie was over and she decided that she would put in a new movie herself. The problem is that her TV is on top of her dresser. Kayla climbed up the handles of her dresser and the dresser and TV fell on her head. Thankfully I was only five minutes away. I called my Mom to meet me at home so we could go to the hospital. When I got home she wasn't crying, she was actually very pleasant but the left side of her face was swelling up while I looked at her, so we went to the closest Er. BIG MISTAKE.First of all, they left us waiting for over four hours just to see a nurse practioner. Of course her being just under two was trying to run all over the place. They said, she looks okay but let me see what the doctor wants me to do with her. Then she comes and says, he wants us to run a cat scan, and as soon as we read the results, you'll be out of here. This was at about 12:30, we got there at 8:30. At about 3:30 the results finally came back, they didn't want to bother the radiologist, so they sent the cat scan to Australia to read! Okay, I'm in Philadelphia!!! Now all of a sudden there's a doctor around, they tell me my baby had a fracture under her eye. When we took her back to a bed, because we were in the waiting room at this time, the doctor now says there is a skull at her right temple. Now this made no sense to me because all of her swelling and bruising was on the left. They decided they wanted to do a full body cat scan and an xray of all her extremities to rule out any other breaks. While she was in xray, I was talking to the nurse and I asked her if they were sure there was a fracture, because she was acting fine. Now she informs me that she read the cat scan herself, but she has a definite right temple fracture, probable left temple fracture, and they could not rule out a fracture under her eye. Well needless to say, I was a mess. They now tell me that the local Childrens hospital is on their way for her where they have reserved a bed in the special care unit. My baby needed to be seen by a neuro surgeon, trama surgeons and an eye specialist immediately. When the trauma transport team showed up to pick her up, they found out that there was never a scan of her neck to rule out damage, so now they have to put her in a neck brace. They also had to draw more blood out of her because the other hospital did not send her blood to the lab early enough. We went in the ambulance at about 6:00 AM, and by now my baby only had about 15 minutes sleep, I had been up since 6:00 the previous morning, and her father and my mom weren't much better. We got to the hospital where the trauma team and neuro surgeon were waiting for us. Within about 2 hours of being there and numerous exams by numerous people guess what, my baby does not have ANY fractures. By this time she finally fell asleep. They decided to observe her until she woke up, send her cat scans to their radiologist for a second opinion, and once she woke up and ate something, as long as she held it down, she could go home. What a relief!! While she was sleeping the radiologist from the other hospital called and he didn't see any fractures either. So nice of them to tell me now. We also had a nice little visit from social workers informing us that we can be seen as neglectful. Just what we wanted to hear after being in the emergengy room for 25 hours and awake for 31. She finally woke up at around 1:00, ate some apple sauce and yogurt, and we were free to go.
We went right to the toy store to let her pick up a little something, and went home and took a little nap. I have never been so physically and emotionally drained in my entire life.
I am seriously considering talking to a lawyer, what do you all think I should do?
Well sorry this entry is so long, I just couldn't shorten that story,
Janis and Kayla
