Janet's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

November 17, 2003

Hi Everyone!

I just realized that it has been nearly 3 weeks since I last wrote an entry. Every free moment has been spent preparing for the upcoming holiday events and searching for a day care center for Josh.

I have come to the realization that John and I are unusually picky parents! I have now visited 23 day care facilities. Out of those there are only a few I would even consider leaving Josh and my husband vetoed most of those. A couple of weeks ago we thought we found a place. John and I had both visited the school during school hours and liked what we saw. The director and the teacher that I met, seemed to really care about the kids. I paid the $70 registration fee and Josh was scheduled to start January 2nd. I asked if it was okay to bring Josh by from time to time so that he would be familiar with the place befor his actual start date. The director said that was fine and that is what we did. I paid the registration fee last Wednesday and on Friday I brought Josh by for a surprise visit. It was just one thing after another and I decided that day that I would not be leaving Josh there after all. First, there was no one there mid day to stop us from walking right into the class room. No one even asked who I was or why I was there. I walked into the class room and Josh and I started playing with the other kids, no questions asked. The director did recognize me and did eventually introduce me to the other teachers. I was told that it was "Hygiene Week" and that the children were being taught to be hygienic. They had several sets of plastic teeth and the children were brushing the teeth with tooth brushes. At first I thought this was a really fun idea until I realized that there were not enough tooth brushes for each child to have so they were sharing. The problem is, the kids would brush the plastic teeth, then their own and then share the tooth brush with the other children (not very hygienic after all!) After witnessing this, I was told that I was in the wrong room that Josh was too old for this room and was walked over to another, much smaller room with older children. I had never seen this room before and when I toured the school it was never shown to me. We stayed about 15 minutes longer and left after I saw a teacher assist a child going "potty". Neither the child or the teacher washed their hands afterwards and that was the last straw for me. On hygiene week, a week when the kids are to be taught about good hygiene, with a parent watching the hands were not washed. I wonder what they do when no one is watching! I left the school without a word because I wanted to be reasonable when I talked to the director. This all happened on a Friday, so I called Monday morning. The director refused to refund my money! They only had my money for 2 1/2 business days and they wouldn't return it to me. If this is how a grievance is handled at this level, I am counting my lucky stars that I didn't place Josh at this school!

Anyway, the good news is that I have since found another place for Josh. I didn't give them any money until I had visited the school twice during school hours, my husband visited and I brought Josh for a visit. As it turns out Josh's best friend from school will be attending this school too so there will be a familiar face. I feel such a weight off my shoulders to have this decision behind me. I know that the general consensus is that I am overly selective, but there is nothing in my life more precious to me than my Son and I don't want to place him anyplace where I have doubts.

So, Halloween has come and gone. Josh wasn't as interested in carving the pumpkin as I thought he would be. My son is a neat freak and wasn't crazy about putting his hands in all that goop! But, we got it carved and it looked really good. Josh had a great time "trick or treating", he only went to a few of our close neighbors but he liked the idea of getting treats! Halloween landed on a Friday this year, so we thought we would be handing out candy until late at night. To my surprise the last visitor we got was at about 7:30 pm. It rained here and the poor kids were bundled up in coats over their costumes. Most of them were soaking wet by the time they got to our door. It was cold too, so I guess they just called it a night a little earlier than usual. We ended up having several bags of candy left!

Josh had the stomach flu this weekend and just wasn't feeling good at all. It is such a bummer to see him sick. I picked him up after school on Thursday and the teacher told me that towards the end of the day he just wasn't himself. I could tell right away that he was coming down with something. I took him home and by that night he had a fever of 102. Friday he was vomiting and had a fever on and off for the whole day. Saturday he was able to eat, but still had a low grade fever. Sunday he seemed fine and today He went back to school. I am crossing my fingers that he is fully recovered. He seemed to be, but slept in the car on the way to school today, which is unusual.

As for TTC, I saw my OB about 2 weeks ago and he has referred me to an infertility specialist. I don't know why that bothers me so much, after all I wanted more tests. It's just the name I guess, how can I be infertile? I have a son and had a pregnancy a year ago that ended in miscarriage, so clearly I can get pregnant! I checked with my insurance and they do pay for 50% of (most) infertility treatments, so that is a plus. The initial consultation is $250. so I will have to pay $125. I called the doctor to make an appointment and the first available is January 29th! (2 1/2 months away). I am hoping that I get PG before I ever make it to this appointment, but if I don't I am ready to move forward with this process. Today is day 24 so keep your fingers crossed that I can cancel my appointment by next week!

That's all for this week. Thanks for reading!!!
