Hi Everyone,
The last time I wrote, Josh had just gotten 9 stitches in his chin. We went to see the doctor last Wednesday to have them removed. I was concerned about this because I feel like Josh has been traumatized enough and I had no idea how he would react to having the stitches removed. Having never been through this before, I didn't know if they would have to restrain him with the papoose again or if they would just hold him down. Would it hurt? Would he be afraid when he saw the doctor? All these thoughts were in my mind in anticipation of this visit.
Well, Wednesday came and Josh and I made the trip to the doctor. Josh was as happy as can be playing in the waiting room. They called his name and off to the examination room we went. He showed no fear of the doctor and I thought, this is a good sign. The doctor took a look at his wound and said that the ER doctor had done a nice job on the stitches and Josh had healed well. He called in a nurse to help restrain Josh so they could take the stitches out and Josh still appeared to be fine. We laid Josh on the table, the nurse held his arms and I held his legs and the doctor clipped a couple of times and pulled out the stitches. He took a magnifying glass and checked Josh's chin to make sure they were all out and we were done! There was no crying (by either of us) and Josh seemed to be no worse for the wear! I still can't believe it was that easy.
But wait, it is not over yet. Wednesday evening when I was bathing Josh, I noticed that I still saw some blue thread in his chin. When I took a closer look, I saw 3 stitches still there! I didn't even think to check this out before I left the doctor's office. How could he have missed this? He checked Josh's chin with a magnifying glass? At this point I was baffled. What should I do? Do I go back to the doctor's office and put Josh through all that again? Do I take them out myself? I did the logical thing, and called my Mom. My Mom is a registered nurse and raised 4 kids, so whenever I am in doubt she always steers me in the right direction. She told me that if there is a piece of thread easily accesible that I should try to remove the stitches myself. If the thread did not pull out easily or if it needed to be cut, she could come over and do it or I could take Josh back to the doctor. So, Thursday night when Josh was in the bath tub, I steralized the tweezers and pulled the remaining stitches out. They came right out and Josh didn't even realize what had happened. Thank goodness, they are finally out!
Just when I thought I wouldn't need my doctoring skills for a while, Josh came home from my parents house with five wood splinters in his hand yesterday. He must have grabbed a wooden stick or fence or something, but he never cried and my parents never noticed it. I tried, but couldn't get the splinters out with the tweezers. I had to steralize a needle and take them out that way. They weren't too deep, so it was mostly the top layer of his palm that was affected. I don't think it was too painfull, but I am sure it stung a bit. Poor guy, if it's not one thing it's another.
As for me, I think I should apply to medical school or something! Every time Josh is sick with anything, I am always looking for more information about it on the internet or speaking to his pediatrician. I try to learn as much about it as possible so I can better care for him. I have learned about everything form the common cold to pneumonia. Now, I can add to my list of achievements: removal of stitches and splinters. Does it get easier from here on out?
Josh and I went to see the Parachute Express band on Friday night. This is a childrens band that performs all the music for gymboree. Several of the kids from Josh's daycare were going to this show and I was able to get tickets, so off we went. I wasn't sure how he would like sitting in an assigned seat listening to music, but I thought we would give it a try to see how it worked out. Worst case scenerio, we could just go home in the middle of the show. I am so glad now, that I took a chance on this. Josh loved it! He was clapping his hands and bouncing up and down to the beat of the music. It was a pretty interactive program so there were times when the kids could get up and dance. Josh had a great time dancing and seeing his friends. Now I know the next time Parachute Express comes to town we will be there!
Well, that's all for this week!
Thanks for reading!
