December 5, 2001

Monday December 3rd, 2001.

Well, I guess it's really official now…my little girl has had her second birthday party, all the celebrations have been and passed, and now I'm the proud mum of a TWO YEAR OLD! (It's a little hard to believe at times…still!)

Pixie's party was fantastic. Seven friends, four little girls, a sunny (muggy and humid actually) Sunday, a manicured backyard complete with swing-set and gazebo, lots of food, a couple of bottles of champagne, lots of party hats, party dresses, even a set of wings amongst the party guests (a little fairy outfit), lots of music, and wa-lah…a fine fun day was had by all.

Jay and I were, as per usual, up till the wee hours the night before, blowing up 100 balloons (I praise the invention of the balloon-pump), decorating the birthday cake (I'd baked a damn fine carrot cake which we decorated with cream cheese icing, piping, writing, 100s and 1000s, etc, etc), and draping the family room with streamers and birthday banners and bunches of balloons. By the time Pixie woke up on Sunday morning the lounge-room floor was a mass of balloons, the family room was decorated, and the girl realised that TODAY WAS THE DAY she'd been waiting for all these months. Yes, it was the day of PIXIE'S PARTY!!!!!

So we all donned our new frocks (well, all except Jay!!), prepared the last of the nibbles, and danced around the house until the guests arrived at lunchtime. We sat outside and drank champagne and iced tea, munched on corn chips and salsa and guacamole, and watched the littlies try on all the party accessories…we had crowns, little starry halos, Hawaiian-style flower leis, tinsel-trimmed party hats, party blowers. It was gorgeous.

The kids spent most of the party on the swing-set (it's got enough swinging bits to hold 6 kids!)…they loved it! They were also crazy for the "balloon-pit"….almost the entire lounge-room floor was covered in balloons and I'd have to say it was the best $6 I spent. The kids squealed and ran through all the balloons, and even us adults couldn't resist a romp through. So apart from getting RSI from pumping up balloons for about 2 hours, I would thoroughly recommend going overboard on the balloon front! Mind you, I'm getting a tad sick of having so many balloons left lying around the house…I'm going have to get out the pins and ruthlessly pop them all, but I'm a little afraid the birthday girl will get very upset with me if I do!

Pixie has been talking about her party everyday since the big event! We've been eating carrot cake and left over spinach rolls for days…and everytime I pull the left over birthday cake out Pixie chants, "Happy Birthday cake, Happy Birthday cake!" I swear, I've had to sing "Happy Birthday To You," about 7 billion times in the last few days, but every single time the girl gets a big grin on her pixie-face and at the end when I shout, "Hip, hip…" she throws her arms in the air and yells, "Hoo-way!"

All the effort and planning, preparation and expense was worth it. To see my girl so excited, to know she's been thinking about it for days afterwards, to know that we gave her a wonderful celebration because we cherish her so much, it was all well worth it. Besides, I love a party, and can be found swilling champagne with the best of them, never at a loss for the party-spirit.

Which is a good thing, because we're doing it all again in two weeks time!! YEE-HAW! Yep, we're having a HUGE Christmas party in our backyard on the 15th, for all the playgroup families (about 20!) and for all Jay's workmates! It's going to be big - well, big in our books. About 30 invitations went out - all to families, many with multiple kids, so it's going to be rather hectic! We're having it in the late afternoon-early evening (kid friendly time) in the backyard (I'm praying for sunshine) and everyone is bringing a plate of food or BBQ to share! I'm going to empty the family-room except for the huge dining table, which we'll stack to the max with party food and nibbles! Should be a feast! I'm baking shortbreads in Christmas-tree and star-shapes, rum balls (with way too much rum! Eow!), florentines, and a carrot cake in the shape of a Christmas-tree which I'll decorate with cream-cheese frosting (like snow…despite the heat!) multicoloured chocolate candies (like Christmas baubles) and a string of tiny silver balls (like a string of tinsel)….hopefully it'll look very festive. I have a reputation to uphold you see…I am a "legend" (so the girls tell me, *blush*) at playgroup for cooking the bestest cakes when it's my turn to contribute morning tea. So I've gotta go ALL OUT for my Christmas party! Apart from that I might marinate some chicken wings for the BBQ, and order some more spinach rolls (with sweet chilli dipping sauce they were the BESTEST food at the party!).

We're going to drag the stereo system into the garage, hopefully our old turntable too, and a few friends are bringing their ANCIENT record-collections, so hopefully it'll be a blast-from-the-good-old-days and someone will volunteer their services to be DJ! I heard someone mention an old KISS record, so it should be a good laugh! I want lots of music, and hopefully dancing with the children in the backyard! We'll set the Christmas tree with it's string of twinkling lights in the family room window (facing into the backyard) and hopefully we'll buy some coloured lanterns to string around the pergola so when the sun starts to set we can turn them on and have a twilight disco! Ha!

I tell you, this is one girl who's not letting her big house and fabulous backyard go to waste. And I don't care how many glasses get smashed, how much cake gets trampled into the cream-coloured carpet (ha!), or how trampled our nice green lawn gets…I plan to kick-on and party, and so I shall. I plan to have a reputation in this new city I now call home for having fabulous parties that everyone wants to get invited too! Well a girl can dream can't she?

Anyways, I'd best get this posted soon….think of us, partying on down under, and if you want to exchange Christmas cards, leave your e-mail on my message board.

Rock on sisters!

Much love, Eloise ~ the party-queen!
