Eloise's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

April 4, 2001

Wednesday 4th April, 2001.

Well, I just can't seem to churn out those diary entries like I used
too! I'm lucky to find the time once a fortnight. It's a shame, I always
enjoyed writing on a weekly basis but what can I say? A toddler's life
is busy, busy, busy!

Pixie was sick for 10 days. Phew, it was a long haul, very exhausting
for all concerned. She had a rather persistent gastro-bug, and was
throwing up all over the place, and filling her nappy with THE MOST
PUTRID smelling poops! I swear, as soon as she'd squeeze them out the
most evil bottom-vapours would infiltrate the ENTIRE house like a
gas-bomb was let off. EUGH! They were causing her a lot of pain, and she
was barely eating, and spending all her time either snoozing or
complaining. Poor mite! So we were house-bound in stink-ville for ten
days..ARGH..I am very strict about not mingling with the masses when
we're sick, I HATE spreading sickness around, not to mention inflicting
THAT smell on unsuspecting citizens! But I tell you, by the end of the
ten days we were all going stir crazy, I was so bored I was losing my
mind (or perhaps it was all the gas I'd inhaled?). Thankfully Jai, being
the ever-responsible hands-on Daddy that he is, took some time off work
to help look after Pixie and I got some much needed time off for a
breathe of fresh air..ahhhhhhhhhh!

And so we've come out of convalescence this week, we've thrown open the
doors and windows and blasted the place with fresh air, and as is often
the case, Pixie's routine has completely changed. A week of illness
often throws all patterns out the window and when you return to what you
thought was 'normality' you find that everything has changed! Luckily
things have changed for the better.I think! Pixie is taking a very solid
two hour nap a day.YIPPEEEE..but has decided if she's going to sleep so
long during daylight hours then she's going to wake up before the
flippin birds in the morning. She's been waking up at 5.30
am!!!!!#@$%^&*@## Luckily Jai does the early-morning shift before
leaving for work at 7:45, so I get to sleep in until the half-decent
hour of 8am! Mind you, I don't get off that easily, Jai might get up
with her at 5.30 am but I wake up to feed her at least 3-4 times a
night..ARGH!!!!!!!!!! She sleeps in our bed but I have NEVER been able
to fall back asleep while she's feeding. Her feeding usually irritates
me too much for sleep, and so I'm awoken up every few hours and kept
awake for 15 minutes. When, oh when, oh when will she give up night-time
feedings??? Is this behaviour normal or just a stinking bad habit???
Maybe it's time to kick her out of our bed? Maybe it's time to wean her?
*BIG SIGH* Sometimes I find these decisions really tough, and I have not
the faintest idea what to do! My problem is I have NO IDEA what I
believe in. I have no particular parenting philosophy to guide me in my
decision making. About the only principle I adhere to with any kind of
consistency is: 'do whatever's the easiest at the time.' This, however,
has lead us down some rather crooked paths.

The other change for the better is she's started eating again. Prior to
this illness Pixie was the FUSSIEST BIRD-PICKING EATER I've ever had the
misfortune to feed. She would only ever pick at her food, turned her
nose up at almost everything, tossed most foods over the edge of her
high-chair and would be demanding snack foods constantly because she was
hungry! Suddenly, after a day or two of no solids during her illness,
she's taken to food with a gusto. Most things I present to her she will
eat.everything that is, except cheese and egg.she HATES them. And so
it's a huge relief that she's eating well again, and not constantly
rejecting the food I present to her. I can't tell you how difficult it
is to be constantly trying to think up new things to feed a fussy eater.
It's extremely hard work, and very stressful when you know they need to
eat more but they won't eat anything healthy you present them. I got so
desperate once that I caved in completely and gave her a chocolate
easter bunny to eat for lunch.*gasp*! She sat on my knee and sucked that
chocolate down like it was heaven itself.she was moaning and groaning
with pleasure, it was pretty funny once I got over the SHEER HORROR of
what I was doing.hahahaha! I'm not very strict about what she eats any
more, you can't afford to be when you're living with a picky eater,
although she usually gets dried apricots and rice crackers for snacks so
don't think it's all chocolate bunnies and greasy chips at our house of
fun!

As for me and food. I am still dieting.although the diet gets a little
slacker with every passing week. I am absolutely DYING for some
chocolate, and am in torture with all the yummy easter-treats staring at
me, calling 'eat me', 'eat me', 'eat me' from every shop counter!
However, I would like to make a stupendous announcement..drum roll
please.ah-hem.I have now officially lost 5 KILOS, (about 10-11 lbs) and
I am wearing my levi's on a regular basis, even though the top button is
often undone!!!! YIPPEEEE!! And so it only took me 16 months to return
to my pre-pregnancy weight (hehehehe), but I'd like to lose a few more
kilos before I'm done. I was always slightly over-weight before pg, and
so I'd like to get back to a reasonable weight for a short-arse like
myself. Wish me luck, 55 kilos (and fashionable clothing) here I
come!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, the girl, the girl, the girl. Pixie is constantly learning new
words and concepts. This week 'mana' has finally become 'manana' (her
word for banana), and she can just say so many wonderful words it's
amazing. She understands more and more all the time, and is very
observant. Each time we drive the car into the garage she calls from the
backseat, "ball, ball, ball" and we just thought she was being silly,
until one day Jai noticed a basketball sitting in a bucket on the garage
shelf and realised she was pointing out the ball. She LOVES balls..and
gets very excited when she sees one on the telly, or out at the park.
She loves kicking her ball around the lounge-room and gets seriously
excited when she notices a balloon anywhere, and believe me, she notices
them EVERYWHERE. In the shopping centre she'll call out "ba-lloon" and
sure enough, if I scour the shop windows eventually I'll find the
balloon she spotted thirty paces away! And she's going crazy for music
these days. Pixie and Daddy have Saturday morning discos in the
lounge-room which is hilariously cute.he'll put on a Kinks CD and Pixie
will run round and round and round in a circle squealing and
laughing.that's how she dances.running round really, really fast in
circles.funny! I've even caught her bopping away in her car-seat when
I've been playing The Smiths on the car stereo; yes, yes, the poor
kid's musical tastes will be wildly out of date by the time she hits
primary school! Jai and I are firmly in retro mode, I'm afraid.reliving
the good old days I suppose..the days of late nights and long sleep ins,
drunken dinner parties and café breakfasts!!!! ARGH, what am I doing
torturing myself this way?

Anyway, I gotta go, time is up even though I have lots more to say.
Pixie is scampering around my study squealing and talking gibberish, and
trying to pull all the books of my bookshelf and emptying every drawer
and cupboard she can find! And so until next time, all the best to you
and yours,

Eloise~
