Elisa's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

December 21, 2000

So much has happened lately. I’ve been really sick: first pneumonia, then stomach flu and then a bad case of mastitis (think flu coupled with your breast in a vise). The kids also had the flu - we were all sick during the same week. It was so hard caring for them while I was sick - at one point CJ and I were throwing up at the same time! Ugh.

Julianna has been peeing on the potty pretty regularly, before going to sleep at night and when getting up in the morning. She even pooped in the toilet once! She enjoys washing her hands afterward. Speaking of hands, the other night, Jules slipped away from Alvin while he was reading all three kids bedtime stories (I was upstairs getting pajamas for them). She went into the kitchen, reached into the garbage can and pulled out a can of peas we had opened for dinner. The next thing we knew, she was screaming. I ran downstairs, Alvin ran into the kitchen and he found her finger stuck to the lid, bleeding. He removed it as I walked into the room, and we applied direct pressure right away. Once we looked at it, it was clear she needed stitches. It was deep and wide, and wouldn’t stop bleeding.

We called my parents, who came over right away (thank goodness they live close by - I don’t know what we would do without them). We rushed her to the emergency room. After about 15 minutes of her screaming in the waiting room (!!), they took her into the ER where it was confirmed that she did need stitches. It took another 15 minutes for them to come back and do it. I lay in the bed holding her and singing while Alvin held her legs in place. The nurse held her hand down, and the nurse practitioner put three stitches in. They wanted to use a papoose board to restrain her, but we wouldn’t let them. When CJ fell and hit his head, we didn’t use the papoose then, so we didn’t want to subject Jules to it, either. The nurse and NP were afraid we would faint - especially Alvin - if we watched, but I assured them that my husband had seen me birth three children naturally (including a breech baby - Jules!) and he could handle it. He did a great job!

Jules screamed the whole time, but was quite strong about the whole thing. She has been great since then, saying she’s OK, but it hurts. It’s so hard to see her in pain. You try to protect you kids as best as you can, but things still happen. They move too quickly, and they are so curious. Wouldn’t it be nice if they were Teflon coated?

The girls celebrated their 2nd birthday! I can’t believe they are 2 years old. The party was so much fun. We had a private class at their song and dance class with about five kids (plus mine). It was perfect. They got to play first, then we moved downstairs and had a class where they played with musical instruments, bells, puppets, etc. They danced, jumped, sang and played with a parachute. We then had pizza for lunch, followed by two birthday cakes. The girls tried to touch the flames rather than blow out the candles, ouch. But the only negative part that happened was that CJ tripped on the stairs and banged his lip. He was upset, and who wouldn’t be with a bloody lip? But he calmed down thanks to the wonderful attention of Linda, the class instructor. She’s great.

Cass and Jules loved their gifts! They got so much cool stuff, like baby doll accessories, stuffed animal backpacks, stuffed kitty cats in toy carriers, a play farm, Magna Doodle, toy Jeep, etc. They are doing a good job sharing with CJ and each other. With Christmas gifts coming in, too, they have entirely too much. It’s time to look through old toys and give some to charity.

Time is moving way too fast, and yet I find myself looking forward to them being 3 and 4 years old so I can take them to ballet classes, art classes and the like. They will enjoy these things so much. They are so with it, outgoing and talented. Cassie is such a dancer! When we take her to our song and dance class, she is in her element. The other day, she was at the barre doing moves!! She just loves it.

CJ is doing very well. He is nearly potty trained during the day! He will keep himself dry all day, and even poop on the toilet (though he doesn’t like to). I am really proud of him. He’s growing up so well! He is very loving and happy.

Thanksgiving was great, and now we’re looking forward to seeing the family for Christmas.

Happy Holidays!
