3/29/00 Journal Entry

Hi all. Hope everyone is well. It's been kinda crazy around here lately.... Nathan has been sick. It all started last Tuesday when we took him in for his 15-month check-up (which went very well). He got his last round of vaccination shots and went home a relatively happy kid. Wednesday went by without incident and Thursday morning and afternoon were fine. Then, late Thursday afternoon when he woke up from a nap I noticed that he was very subdued and very hot. I took his temperature, and sure enough he had a fever. For the next few days his temp would be normal in the morning/afternoon and then rise in the evening. After many doses of Infant Tylenol, the fever episodes stopped. Then the rash began. Really it was more like splotches all over his chest, back, neck and some of his face. We took him in to the doctor where he was diagnosed with Roseola disease, which is basically a virus. The doctor said they don't really do anything for it because it will run its course in a few days. Sure enough Nathan is pretty much back to his healthy happy self today. Interestingly, the doctor was confused about how he got the virus since he is not in day care. I racked my brain for about a day before I realized that he probably got the virus from the doctor's office on Tues. when he went for his check-up. There are lots of little sick ones there and they all play with the same toys. The learning from this experience is that from now on we will bring our own toys and books to doctor visits. Obviously we can't protect him from every single germ that's out there, but we can certainly do things to decrease the risk.

Now that our little one is healthy again, we are looking forward to the weekend. Rich and I bought one of those jogging strollers so I can take Nathan with me when I run and Rich can take him when he goes for his walks. Every day that we have him outside and see how he likes to run and play, we realize that it really is time for him to have a backyard and perhaps a puppy. To that end, we are actively looking to purchase our first home ... which is proving to be a time-consuming, yet exciting process. Hopefully in the next few months we can get that wrapped up and enjoy the summer in our own home.

Take care, Debbie, Rich and Nathan
