Happy Halloween to all. I am so excited about our day that I had to come right over to write about it all so as not to forget anything. I have always loved Halloween, especially as a young child, and I wanted William to have a good experience. I am pleased to say that his first official Halloween was a true success.
Will has been away for a couple of days and I wasn't expecting him until around 6. I wanted to take William out before dark though (although it was dark by the time we got home), so Angie, Ben and Emma came over to our house at around 4:30 to do some trick or treating together. All week I was trying to get William to try on his lamb costume. IT belonged to him Aunt Amy and was made by his nan, and was a little feminine, but warm and with lots of room to wear warm clothes underneath. He continued to refuse it right up until about 4 when I had to turn to bribery to get him to put it on. I told him I would give him a jelly bean if he wore his costume, and he immediately ran to get it for me. I was also trying to tell him about trick or treating and what to expect. He is a little wary of new people, so I was totally expecting him to not want to go to a strange persons door, or he would want me to carry him, or he would run away. SO while we were still home I told him he had to knock on the door hold open his bag and say, "trick or treat". Then when I asked him what he had to say after the door was opened he said, "halloween".
When our friends arrived we set out down my street. With three little ones we were not intending to venture very far, but just wanted them to experience the fun of Halloween. They were all expert trick or treaters. Knocking in doors, saying trick or treat (except Emma who is 1) and remembering to say thank you (most of the time anyway). Emma was just like the 2 year olds, standing up on the doorsteps with her little bag held open. When we returned home, WIlliam still in his costume (warm clothes and all) was an excellent little helper, handing chips and candy to all the little boys and girls who came to out door. At first I thought he would want to keep it all to himself, as he said so much himself before the first child came. But he was very eager to open the door and dish out a treat or two. At one point William was standing out on the front porch, watching some of the kids who were bypassing our house and he was calling out to them at the top of his lungs, "trick oh treat-ors"! And after each child left he'd follow them out ont he porch and yell , "Bye bunny rabbit" (or whatever they were dressed up as).
When Will arrived home, he took over the door while my grandmother and I ate our delicious supper of riga -'boney'. WIlliam of course had eaten much earlier, and was too full of treats to eat again. Nan and I then took WIlliam out in the car to a few houses of people who we know. William absolutely loved every minute of this experience. My only fear now is that he won't understand that Halloween is over. He also ate a scary amount of candy today, well not as much as I used to eat when I was young, but we don't usually permit candy and he had at least 2 lollipops, 2 bags of chips, a pack of fuzzy peaches and a treat size twizzler. His candy will be hidden tomorrow (kept for daddy's enjoyment), and most of his chips and bars were regiven - out of necessity. I was not prepared for the large number of children who came to our door tonight. I bought chips (20), bars(75), lollipops (100), and twizzlers, (75), and we almost ran out of our stuff quite early. OF course we were giving more than one treat, but we had at least 100 trick or treaters. So I went through William's things and put out all the cheezies and bars and things that he was allergic to anyway. However, things quietened down at 8:00 and we still have some things left over. IT was a great day though, and one that I will remember always.
Hope everyone enjoyed their halloween as much as we did.
Dawn
