Dawn's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

October 26, 2003

Fall has officially arrived... I guess it's been a little over a week now that the vibrant colours I love have really become dominant. The colder weather has set in as well. Although it is stil above seasonal here most days. And the forecast for Halloween is 17 degrees. Unheard of here. I just had Will's mother send down this cute lamb costume she made for Will when he was small. It's warm and has room for lots of layers underneath. But I may not need as many layers as I had anticipated. I am looking forward to William's first Halloween. Well his third really, but the first time that he will actually be a particpiant. Before I go any further, I also have to report that I finally had some corn mature enough to eat. Corn is not a common crop in this neck of the woods, but if you start it indoors (which I didn't) you can usually get a few good meals by mid-September. I was late planting mine though, and was sure that I wasn't going to get to eat any fresh corn this year (there is nothing like plucking it right from the garden and putting it right into a boiling pot)...however I did get two full ears this morning. I guess the warmer weather gave them some extra growing time, as otherwise they would have been killed by frost by now. And boy were they delicious!

Potty progress

William continues to pee and poop in the potty, but not really on a regular basis. There have been a few days where he have no successes, but most days he has at least one. Other rare days he will go several times. I am noticing however, that he seems to go through a thought process when he realizes that he has to pee in the potty (that's what he calls it no matter what he does). It's like he realizes that he has to go and excitedly announces his intent, but then sometimes he will stop a moment, and when I go to grab him he'll say no more pee. I'll check him to see if it was too late, which sometimes it is. But other times he doesn't do anything until minutes later. It's like he decides that whatever it is he is doing at the moment (playing dinkies, eating a snack) is much more interesting or important than going to the potty. After all he is wearing training pants during the day, and these are pretty much the same as pampers. I am wondering if this means I should have avoided using these, but I figure they are easier to pull down than pampers (they always seem to stick and every second counts at this stage of the game), and if he does have an accident there is no mess. I am not pushing this issue either, so I want to leave it all up to him.

What happened to 4

I was so excited a few weeks ago when I wrote my last entry that William was counting to three, and not one day later he all of a sudden started counting to 10. I guess counting stairs whenever we climbed them together really sunk in. We were at a birthday parth when I realized that he could do this. He was handing me toys from the little boy's toybox and counting as he passed them to me. One- two- free- pour- pive- sit- seben- eitght- nine- den! I couldn't believe it. And he has been counting everything in sight every sense. HE really loves lining up his dinkies and other cars and counting them. Lately though he seems to jump over 4 and go right to 5. I have no idea why he does this, its like he forgot that the number 4 exists. Still cute though.

Work/daycare

I have been getting a fair amount of work lately. Last week I had 3 full days and 2 half days. My busiest week yet. So far our day care arrangements have been working out just fine. Lisa (his sitter from alst year) phones in her schedule every week and I let Angie (my friend) know when I may need her. He enjoys going to both places. At Lisa's he gets lots of individual attention, and at Angie's he get to play with two other children. I turned down the daycare placement when it came open. I just couldn't make the committment of sending William away when I wasn't necessairly working. I am glad, because that would have meant leaving a lot earlier in the morning, and right now 7:40 is early enough for me.

Other news

We had WIlliam's 2 year picture taken recently (if anyone wants to see them I'd be happy to email). The woman had to work pretty hard to get him to stay still long enough to smile for 7 poses. And what a shame too cause we managed to get out of there with only the special (one pose). William is saying the cutest things lately too. Sometimes I don't know where he gets things. He frequently says, "No way Jose" when I ask him to do something. When I asked him who taught him this he said, "Annie", one of Will's friends moms who they went to vist one day a few weeks ago. I asked her if that was possible and she said it was something she said around her granddaughter, so maybe... ALso today while we were having dinner at WIll's grandparents William said, "turkry straw ha ha ha" (he still doens't use it, is , the, etc in his sentences). Now this is a song that we have sung together but not for over a month for sure. He wouldn't tell me where he got that from.

Hope everyone else is enjoying their fall. This is the first night of "fall back" and I admit that this part of fall does not thrill me. Makes the evening seem awfully long. However William was asleep before 8pm for once.

Thanks for reading
Dawn
