William is 2. I can hardly think of anything to say about this fact except that it does not seem real. The past two years have gone by so fast (I still think of the baby year as being a few months ago) and he is becoming such a big boy.
We spent a full week at home with my parents while WIll was away for work. First of all, I have to mention that although it was a warm Saturday when we left I did not anticipate that the rest of the week would be so beautiful and hot (even in summer the west coast of the island tends to be on the cooler side). The only clothes that weren't pants and sweaters and traditional fall wear were the clother we wore that day. Needless to say the smae outfits were washed and worn a few times that week. IT was above 20 every single day, perfect for walks and trips to the beach, playground, and rides on poppy's quad (William's favourite activity). It was so hot here at home, that they had to close school for a day (temp was almost 40!) I am sure glad I wasn't here for that. The nice weather did mean that we could hold some of William's party activities out side in the backyard, which was really nice, and we will have to compare our pictures of the kids in shorts and tees to furute years to see what they will be wearing, when it is usually much more brisk.
William's Party
I have to say, William's party was really nice. We invited mostly family, and a little friend he has there who is three days older than him, plus their moms, dads, whoever. My dad barbequed hamburgers and hotdogs, and we had corn, salads, and of course lots of sweets. I made WIlliam's cake, in the shape of a construction hat (thank you Anne!), and it was a real hit with all the kids. We played a few simple games, mostly for the older kids. THey especially loved Bob the Builder says (like Simon but using construction verbs). William didn't really join in, but he was running around doing the actions. My aunt also drew a child sized Bob the Builder and we played pin the hammer, also quite fun. We opened the presents just before eating, which in hindsight was a bit of a mistake. William was no doubt hungry at this point, and all he could pay attention to was the bowl of corn puffs on the coffee table. He half open a gift, then turn and stuff a handful of puffs in his mouth. I did manange to get him to say thank you to everyone, but he wasn't as attentive as I thought he would be. The highlight for WIlliam was when we brought out the cake... he talks about cake all the time but rarely gets to eat it. I had told him about blowing out the candles, and he was ready to blow before the cake was even in front of him. Then he immediately took his fork and dug in!
William's big gift was a little TYkes workshop that my mother got with her club z points. He spent a long time operating the "saw" and sanding down the plastic birdhouse that came with it. He also got a my first leap pad. Ti seems really interesting, and he seems to enjoy it, but I want to be sure to interact with him when he's using it. I love reading to him, and I don't want this to interfere with our regular reading sessions.
Too much sugar really is a bad thing....
I think in all, William polished off two big pieces of cake, rice krispie cookies, a kool-aid jammer (that was int he loot bags) and a lollipop. He doesn't usually get so many sweet treats in one day, and I think this was way too much for him. That night he was buzzing around until 10 before midnight! I tried everything to get him to go to sleep to no avail. I even lay on my mom's bed with him and turned on the tv, he didn't even want to lie down, and he sat straight up the whole time. I took him back downstairs to play and burn off some energy, and he was literally wild, throwing around fallen balloons and spinning in circles, meanwhile I was exhausted after a long day of party preparations, and the event itself. He finally shut down after we went out to the campfire that my dad and uncles were sitting around, that and the fact that his 8 year old cousin was sleeping oven in our bed and I told him he had to be quiet. He finally drifted off to sleep. Of course, he still woke up at 8 the next morning.
Has too much sugar ever been a problem for your child? Have you had a similiar episopde after a special occasion such as a party?
Does your child have a leap pad? How happy are you with it?
Thanks for reading
Dawn
