Dawn's Diary EntriesDiary Navigation: |
April 26, 2003
I am writing this week's entry from Montreal. I had planned to sit back and relax tonight and watch a movie on the inlaws Satelite while my husband went downtown to the Casino with his sister. However those plans were dashed when my father in law, who was watching a bit of CNN before bed, fell asleep with the remote in his hand. I, not knowing how to change the channel manually, and not wanting the pry the remote from his grasp (not being my own father) was left with nothing to do but catch up on my diary (not at all a bad thing!)
Before I report on our Easter and our big trip to Montreal I am happy to admit that William and I have met a new friend. I have been literally stuck in my house all winter not knowing anyone with whom the two of us could socialize, which of course prompted our visits to the family resource center. Although this did not result in the meeting of any kindred spirits, nor was it an ideal place to bring William (as I mentioned before the "healthy snacks" consisted of kool aid and cookies - I neglected to mention that the rough and tough guy who runs never participated in activities with the kids but spent most of his time upatairs having cigarette breaks! Something I am totally opposed to around children).
Back to my new friend. She did come to the center one day, and I heard her mention that she lived in town for a year as well and found it hard to get to know people (this town does not seem to be receptive to outsiders). I didn't get to talk to her that day, but ran into her the day I took William to get his needle as she was there with her 6 month old daughter. As she was coming out I was going in, so although we spoke briefly, there was hardly any time to exchange phone numbers. Then like it was menat to be, I ran in to her at the new second hand children's store in our community. At first I was on my way out of the store, but as i got in the car my husband urged me to go back in and talk to her some more. Upon doing so i got an invite to visit her (she also has a 2 year old son). I spent the next morning at her house and William and Ben were instant friends. I've read how toddlers usually play beside each other, and not so much "with" one another, but these two boys were sharing toys, playing hide and seek and wrestling together on the couch. it was heartwarming to see William bond with another child his age ( and me with his mom - we have many similarities and interests and it so nice to be able to talk to another adult during the day!)
Easter Weekend
My parents came to visit us for the first time since October (Canadian Thanksgiving) to celebrate Easter with us. It was really nice not to have to do the travelling for a change and William loved having his Nan, Pop and Uncle John around for the weekend. My mom even stayed for an extra couple of days which was really nice. When we go there she has to go to work, then come home and cook, clean etc, and although she still spends lots of time with William, she was able to spend all her time with him this weekend and really bond. On saturday my Dad's brother and his family (wife and 2 kids) as well as my grandmother drove out to spend the day with us and have a wonderful Turkey dinner. Of course William loved every minute of all the attention that was lavished on him by every member of the household that day. Complete with gifts from his cousins and his nan. He is a real cutie when he opens any gifts. He always greets each wrapped treasure with a huge smile, and no matter what the contents are he looks impressed. He was even ready to try on his new pants from Nan, right over the clothes he was already wearing.
Easter morning, I had hidden some plastic eggs around the living room. Some had teddy grahams in them, some had little toy chicks, and some had jellybeans. I was wondering whether or not my 19 month old toddler would be capable of searching our these goodies, but he did so in full force, looking high and low for a coloured egg. He especially liked the ones with jellybeans (and I irresponsibly let him eat a few before breakfast), setting aside the contents of the other eggs for later.
Trip to Montreal
I think I will leave the details of this trip for my next entry, when the whole trip has been completed, possible creat a little suspense here, especially since my husband just called to say that he was bringing home some authentic Montreal poutine. A devilishly delightful treat, that i can't really afford to have. But since I have been doing so much walking these past few days I'll allow myself this one indulgence.
Tune in next time to hear about my first trip ever to Ikea, and how absolutely well behaved William was during our trip.
Dawn
