Dawn's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

April 25, 2004

Here I sit on Sunday almost a week after returning from lovely Spring weather in Montreal, and we are in the middle of a snow storm. Now I am not too concerned about how long the snow will last, as I am quite certain that by noon tomorrow it will all have melted, but I still can't believe what I am seeing as I look out the window. How do I explain to William that his beloved winter is over when it keeps coming back? Just yesterday we were out raking the grass and pruning back the dead flowers from last year, wearing nothing but sweaters. Ahh the joys of loving on the east coast.

Our trip to Montreal

William had an absolute blast on his visit to nanny and poppys house in Montreal. We stayed for 10 days ( two extra than we had planned) and enjoyed lots of long walks, trips to the playground (twice daily), and of course, shopping. William fell in love with this little yellow car in the mall that was an alternative to a shopping cart (they do not exist in our puny mall), and declared that he no longer wanted a stroller, but this car. He had a difficult time saying good-bye upon leaving, he had to give the thing a hug first, but overall he understood that it was to stay in the mall and did not in fact belong to him.

He was quite the little Easter Egg hunter. His grandparents couldn't qutie understnad why I went through so much trouble for such a young child, but he was fully aware of what the Easter Bunny was, and looking for eggs, and he found even the hardest hidden eggs. It was quite enjoyable to watch him search out his treasures. When it was all over and he was counting up his loot he decided that he had missed a spot, that surely there were more eggs hidden somewhere. Poor little guy.

I think the highlight of the trip for me was going tot he Botanical gardens. While the outdoor section did not have much to look at this time of year, there have a series of indoor greenhouses that simulate different environments and house many species of flowers. Being somewhat of a gardener myself I was really excited to see this. William enjoyed it as well, pointing out the different colours, and stopping to have a few sniffs along the way. The greenhouses also featured a butterfly pavillion, with hundreds of beautifully coloured butterflies flying everywhere. Nanny got one to land on her finger, and William thought this all was truly amazing.

I never cease to be amazed at all the things he can remember and understand in his little 2 and a half year old mind. Days after an event he can retell what we did in vivid detail, remember lines from a story that we haven't read in ages, and repeat things said in conversation that we didn't even realize he heard. And his level of understanding is also something to speak about. On our return trip home from Montreal we had to stopover in Halifax. At the airport they have this wooden structure in the spaoe of a transport truck that serves as a play area for kids. While playing on this, a little boy who was older than William was asking him where his brother was. I quickly intervened and said that William didn't have a brother. I didn't say that he soon would, cause after all this boy was a stranger, and I just didn't see the need to get into that. Well, William quickly put me in my place. He ran over to me with this confused look on his face and said, "Mommy, tell him you're having a baby". By this time the boy had lost interest in William and was on the other side of the truck, and I said no, he can't hear me now. William was determined that this boy know he was going to have a baby and so he marched over and informend the boy that his mommy was having a baby, so he would be a big brother after all.

Pregnancy Symptoms

Well, it looks as though I am 13 weeks already. Second trimester? Could it be already. I think I would like to have an ultrasound to confirm this, as it hardly seems possible to be this far along already, but with the ungoing strike of public employees there will be no ultrasounds for quite awhile yet. I still can't believe how fast time is going though. I remember being pregnant with William and counting up the weeks while studying intently my pregnancy books, and all that was associated with each given week. Week number 5, week number 6 (ultrasound due to bleeding) week number 7, weight number 8, week number 9, week number 10 (heart beat heard ont he fetal monitor at dr's office) etc etc etc. Here it is week 13 and I've only been to the dr once, I've had no blood tests or urine tests, and I don't even know when I have to go back for another visit. I just yesterday took out my pregnancy books to see that my baby should be about 3 inches long now, but I feel so out of the loop this time as opposed to the last time. I guess having one active child already takes away from the time that you can focus on your new life that is yet to be.

SO far I am feeling pretty good. I usually feel a little queasy in the evenings and have to lie down, but some fresh air outside often helps that, as does lying motionless. Some nights have been worse than others and one night I even threw up (could it have been the baby's way of telling me that Chinese food is no good for me?)I am not as utterly exhausted as I was the first time around, but I do feel the need to rest after a busy morning (around 3:00), and after 8:00 I delcare myself no longer on duty. NO tender breasts to report, although William does have a renewed fascination with them. I wake up to his hands pawing me in the middle of the night. He tries for a few more grabs in the morning, and someitmes throughout the day as well. And I can stand to have them touched. It's very irritating. I tell him he can only have a hug if he doesn't tough my breasts, so he'll come up to me now and say, "mommy me have a hug, I don't touch your breasts". All in all things are going quite smoothly. William even likes to read to the baby and talk to him and hug him, all without my encouragement. I'm taking this as a good sign of things to come...

Well I guess that't it for now.
