Dawn's Diary Entries

March 21, 2003

Welcome Spring! OR at least I think so. The weather today is sunny, and alhtough I wouldn't quite say that it is warm and srping-like, it is definately warmer. We are going to celebrate this afternoon by going sliding at the park. William and I were out shovelling snow yesterday, (yes shovelling snow) and out he comes from the garage with his sleigh and asks to be repeatedly pulled up ad and down the snowbanks that have been formed on either side of our driveway. So I figure if we take him to th park for an afternoon of sliding we will make his week!

To Gramdmother's house we went...

Last weekend we drove across the island to visit my parents for the long weekend. We try to go over there once per month and once the snow is all gone my parents will resume taking trips to visit us. (My mother is a very nervous driver and refuses to drive on the highway in the winter). I always love bursting through the back door and wandering through the house in search of nanny (if she isn't already at the door to greet us in her ecxitement to see William, and my favourite part is seeing William's reaction to seeing his grandparents after an extended absence. Since he was little he has always seems to recognize them, and greets them with smiles and hugs and squeals of excitement.

He has a routine down pat too for when we gets to nannies. After greeting nan and pop (if he's not working) he looks for John, my brother, who then takes him to find the cat, Jasmine. He then wants to walk through the house, just to make sure everything is as he left it I belive. This weekend for the first time he said John, and it was so cute, as everytime he saw him (for instance if John was out skidooing or for a coffee and had just returned home) William would stop whatever he was doing, throw his arms in the air, yell JOHN! And run to him. They would then go and look for Jasmine together.

This weekend William got a special treat as he was invitied to his cousin Emily's fourth birthday party. She had all the family and some of her friends invited to the community pool for a swimming party which is something William loves to do. Before we left for the party that afternoon, I was telling him all his cousins names to see if he could say them. I would say we are going to see Julia (he has been saying Jul and recognizing her picture for a long time now), and Kersten (he says Ker), Gregory (Gre), Hunter (for the first time he said unter and repeated it over and over again, Emily (Emi he has also said for a while) and Abigail (Abi he has also said for a while). My cousins were excited to see William as they always are, and Julia especially had wanted to hear him say her name. Of course the only one he would say while we were there was Abi, Abi. But as she is not quite one she did not appreciate this as much as the other kids would have.

William did rather enjoy running around and splashing in the pool with the big kids though. I was a little nervous though as this kiddy pool was deeper than the one we go to here.

New words everyday...

Last week as the event of William turning a year and a half drew nearer, I took to writning down the words that he was now saying. I had made such a list when he was 13 months as well. Now, not all of his words are complete, clear words, but they are words that he says consistently when pointing to a certain object or person. I was proud to have filled out an entire sheet of loose leaf, both front and back, and that was before we went away for the weekend. It seems that everytime we visit my mother William returns home with a dozen new words added to his vocabulary. And since Monday, he has added about two dozen more. Literally everyday he will repeat something that I say, and then use it appropriately at a later time. Mom was showing him the colours of his trucks and he says yeldo for yellow. And this week he opend the fridge and pointed saying strawbedis, strawbedis. He has also added sawich (sandwich) and knife to his vocab. What a proud mama I am.

What I am noticing though is that his new words sound more like words than his many others that he has been using for the past few months. For example he still say me for music, mess, mickey, and microwave, and ba for bath, bottle, etc. I am thinking that this is because he has learned those other words when he was still relatively unable to pronounce certain sounds, and now that he can make more sounds he still associates those primitive words with those certain objects. At any rate, it is quite a wonderful experience to listen to him become a talkative little boy (oh yeah, it also helps when I keep him nummies away from him).

I would live to hear from other moms whose toddlers new language developed in a similar way to Williams, or if you noticed any other patterns to your childs language learning.
I would also love to hear if Spring had arrived elsewhere in the world, as we are still waiting!

Take care
Dawn
