Dawn's Diary EntriesDiary Navigation: |
March 12, 2003
As I sit here writing this week's entry I am watching my sweet little boy on tv as we transfer our video tapes to VHS and my husband is upstairs giving him his bath. Ahhh unwinding in this way after a long day is truly blissful.
*18 month checkup*
I entered the Dr's office convinced that when I left I would be full of new knowledge about my growing boy and ready to address my questions about sleeping and eating and normal toddler development. But as always I didn't remember to ask have the questions I had, and I really didn't feel that he was given a thourough examination. I guess the Public Health Nurse will do that when he gets his needle in three weeks time. I had wanted to ask whether or not William should still be taking his vitamin D, and whether or not he needed any other vitamin supplements. I did remember to ask what could be causing the diarrhea that WIlliam has had for almost a week now, to which the dr suggested I go back to not drinking any milk (due to his alergy). And I did mention that William wakes up int he middle of the night and doesn't return to sleep until I feed him. THe dr simply said, well he msut be hungry.
Although that comment didn't help me much it did get me to thinking...William is a picly eater as I have mentioned before and most of the foods he eats are low in fat and calories: bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, strawberries, peaches, and recently celery. HE has stopped eating his old favourites of chicken and ham and will only eat weiners which are not my favourite choice for him and chicken nuggets. Plus he eats infant oatmeal cereal, cheerios, crispix, rice krispies, whole wheat toast and peanut butter, fries (sometimes) and teddy grahams. I sure something is missing but you get the gist of it. My point is that other children his age are drinking whole milk, eating cheese, yogurt, eggs, etc etc. HIgh fat foods that keep you full longer. So maybe my poor little boy is truly hungry at night. My other concern is that I know babies need the fat for proper development, so I worry if he is missing something... but enough worying, on to the fun stuff.
*A new adventure*
FOr a while now I have been wanting to take William to the Family Resource Centre here in town. They offer different programs for young children, chances to play and interact with others and take part in activities, all free of charge. Today, as my husband did not need the car for work, we were able to go for the first time. As always when we enter a new place, William stuck to me like glue for the first 5 minutes. THen he started to get a little more courage and got down to play with the many toys that are available there. When the other kids started to arrive he opened up even more and it was truly a pleasure to watch him watch them and laugh in excitement. I don't know anybody in town so he doesn't get to interact with other children except when we go to visit his grandparents as all my young cousins live there too.
The program this morning was called Rainbow Fun and the kids get free time to play, then are lead through a few stretching exercises and then the coordinator takes out these two cardboard boxes that are long an narrow, holds them in an L shape and the kids take turns crawling through them. WHen it was nearly William's turn I was sure he was going to try and he flopped to his belly in anticitaption. But as his turn came he refused to enter the mysterious cardboard box. He simply jumped up and ran tot he other side where the kids were coming out and flopped down on his belly again. At one point he tried to get me to crawl through, but otherwise he was fully contented to lie and watch. He was too precious and the other moms certainly got a kick out of him.
The program concluded with a "healthy snack" as was noted in the brochure. This healthy snack turned out to be kool-aid and a gigantic oatmeal chololate chip cookie. Thankfully the coordinator asked if William could eat the cookie instead of just assuming, as it would have contained both egg and milk. I told him about his allergies and they had some honey teddy grahams, William's favourite (yet still hardly healthy). Regardless William thoroughly enjoyed his treat, and he sat tot he table and chairs like a real big boy, enjoying being a part of the crowd. We will definately attend another program, perhaps even tomorrow if I am lucky enough to have the car again!
*General cute things*
William is ever keeping me entertained as of late with his new words, facial expressions, etc etc. When he sees something new or exciting he points and puts his mouth in this exaggerated 0 position, and lately when he smiles he scrunches his eyes and nose and projects his bottow teeth outward. It is very cute to see. He loves to look out the window at the cars, and when we go to the mall he yells Car Car, pointing, waving, and trying to get me to kiss them. He really likes Dora the Explorer and is one show that we watch almost every day (mostly becasue I enjoy it too!) He yells Dor when he sees her and dances like crazy to all her songs. Just this evening we were watching and when Dora said her usual prompt of, "Who do we ask when we don't know which way to go?" William yelled out Map, Map. I thought that was sooo cute, especially since he had never done that before.
Well, that concludes yet another entry.
Til next time
