August 16, 2001
Yesterday, on August 15th, Alexandria turned three years old. She has been counting down the days (with the help from us, of course) until her birthday. Strangely, like the past two years, I’ve woken up in the middle of the night during her birth hour. I had let her sleep in bed with me that night, and quietly sang the birthday song to her in the dark. In the morning, her dad and I sang to her in an attempt to wake her (she’s usually a bear in the mornings), and she started smiling with her eyes still closed. We let her open a present in bed and she popped right of it when we mentioned that.
At school, I brought cupcakes for her class, and Alli soaked up all the attention and singing. She announced to each passing person that "today is my birthday. It’s a special day!" We open presents at dinnertime and she especially loved the Magna Doodle. This coming weekend, some family will be here visiting and we’ll be taking her to the Zoo and having her party at Chuck E Cheese. I have a feeling that day will be wearing the both of us out! This morning, she woke up and asked me if it was still her birthday. When I told her no, her face crumbled and she started crying…so, being the softie that I am, I told her that it was her birthday until after her party this weekend.
Also on the excitement front is our wedding next weekend. Alli is incredibly excited about looking like a princess, wearing her beautiful dress and party shoes, having a cake "this BIG", having all our family and friends in attendance, blowing bubbles, and going to the beach with her grandparents while Mom and Dad are in Maui for their honeymoon. The prospect of leaving her for a whole week is bittersweet. Karl and I haven’t had a night to ourselves since she’s been born, and I haven’t been away from her for more than 2 nights. I know that she’s have a wonderful time with her grandparents (who are splitting the week) and we’ve been talking about I enough so she knows that its going to happen.
Since starting this diary, our family has undergone many changes. It has been a wonderful experience writing for my own sanity, and to go back read the earlier entries and be reminded by the antics of my little one. I hope that you’ve enjoyed this as much as I have, and thank you to all of those that have contacted me during this process.
I feel grateful to be a mother and to witness the amazing growth of my daughter in so many ways is a blessing that I cherish. I hope that you take the time to step back and see the wonder that children, your own or not, bring into this world.
Continue your happines,
Chandra and Alexandria
