Chandra's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

May 31, 2000

Our weekend was so nice! The weather at the beach was great. It was forecasted to be rainy and ugly but it turned out to be beautiful and sunny during the day, and it only rained during the night. Perfect!

I turned Alli loose on the sand and watched her go nuts. She ran up and down the stretch of sand in the front of the deck, and picked up every pebble, stick and a few crab legs lying about. She was determined to carry her own bucket and shovel even though the bucket was half her size. We spent a lot of time on the beach. Actually, I spent a lot of time chasing her along the beach and out of the water. I definitely got my exercise this weekend! She found the tide pools where the water was warmer and started jumping in them. Soon, she was soaking wet and covered in sand. She tried to drink the water (Ylech!) and ended up eating a TON of sand. Alli would lie face down in the sand, and just bite the sand, again, and again. At first, I ignored it in hopes she'd figure out that it wasn't too appetizing. But she kept doing it and I couldn't take it anymore! Some people say she must have a nutritional deficiency to eat sand in copious amounts (she also does this at daycare). What is she lacking? Rock? Iron? Sediment? What could it be?!?!

Some older kids made this big, elaborate sandcastle. Alli the Destroyer quickly leveled it and made it her own. She jumped in and out of the moat, sat on the towers and bridges while singing, "Alli house, Alli house..." I practically had to drag her by her heels to go back to the house. She was soaking wet, I was wet from her splashing, and she had sand in crevices I didn't know she had, I was cold so she had to be freezing... but no matter. Alli would have happily stayed all day long. On the walk back to the house, she'd pick up rocks and tell me all about them. Same with sticks, seagull feathers, pieces of rope, crab legs and almost a dead seagull. I barely got that last one in time!!

We also went to the Tillamook Cheese Factory for cheese curds (they squeak on your teeth!) and ice cream. They had this big cow on display where you press a button and this machine starts milking it. Alli mooed the entire time we were there. Her eyes about popped out at the sight of this cow. So, I press the button. Immediately, her hands fly out to grab my chest. "Tee-tees, Mommy! Tee-Tee! Mooooo!" she hollered. A guy standing next to us chuckled nervously, another mom nearby started busting up, and I quickly pulled off her hands, red-faced, and agreed with her. I later bought her a baby ice cream cone and let her at it. I watched my daughter have her first brain freeze. She loved it though.

All in all, we had a great but exhausting weekend. She wore herself (and me) out. It was great to get out of town and it gave me a mental break for finals this week!

Till next time,
