Candace W.'s Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

September 5, 2001

This is going to be a quickie entry, as I have to get ready for a lab section that I am teaching tomorrow. (Yes, I finally got my TA assignment!)

B is for bears! Alexandria had this bear which Al bought for her a while back when she was really sick (in the beginning weeks of daycare) from K-Mart. We bought a backup of it, because you never know when you’ll need an extra bear! She got to the point where she would sleep with the bear, nurse with the bear, but not take it to daycare. Anyway, I switched him with the new one, because he was getting sort of grungy, so I wanted to give him a bath. I never really got around to switching them back. Then we moved, and one day the bear she had was thrown into the toilet. Oh, was she upset! Her bear was all wet and yucky (something that Alexandria really hates) so, I confiscated the toilet-bather bear, and gave her the other one.

I wasn’t really careful, however. And the unspeakable happened: she found both bears! Alexandria was very upset; she looked at me curiously, and then looked sort of betrayed. I tried to explain, but she was still disturbed. She did get accustomed to the bears, and she is okay with them now. I just should have washed the dirty one right away, and hidden it until it was needed. Laziness never pays off.

Alexandria likes to put the bears to sleep, just like I do to her. It’s something she’s been doing for a while. She will carefully lay the bears down on the floor (on their tummies, because that’s how she sleeps!), and then carefully put first one blanket over them, then the second blanket (careful not to get any wrinkles in it, it has to be covering them *just right*), and then the third and final blanket goes on. Then she puts her finger to her lips and says, “Sssshhhhhh!” And then she body slams the bears, giving them exuberant hugs. I don’t know how they’re supposed to stay sleeping after that, but they do. And you just *don’t* try to help do this ritual; she doesn’t need help!

Things are settling down a little bit. I am trying to get into a groove with studying and whatnot. It’s hard, sometimes I just want to come home and study; however, as all student-mothers know, when you’re home, you can forget studying or getting any school work done until everyone is in bed. Alexandria just wants me to pay attention to her after being gone all day, and I can’t blame her. I usually have bunch of things on my mind, so it’s difficult to give her the attention she craves, but I do my best, and hope that everything will turn out okay. And isn’t that what motherhood is all about?
