Well baby visit
Ella had her eighteen-month well baby visit today. She is 31 inches long and weighs 21.5 lbs. I think that is 30th percentile for height and 15th percentile for weight. A little peanut, but a healthy one. Ella’s weight has been a constant stress to me ever since her nine-month well baby appt. She used to be around the 60th percentile and at nine months she stopped gaining weight (or slowed way down) and started dropping percentiles at each consecutive Dr's appt. She went from the 60th to, I think, the 40th the 25th then the 15th. Very stressful to me, since I’ve read over and over “it doesn’t matter how much your baby weighs, as long as she is growing consistently.” Well, as you can see, Ella hasn’t been. Part of it was a couple sicknesses and she’s never been a real big eater, but any real reason for the slow down in growth is still not really explained. But my Dr. pointed out that she has had plenty of energy and was growing cognitively and he never really got too worried. Well, today was the first appt she hasn’t dropped a percentile so that is a relief. I was hoping she might have made up some of the weight but I will be happy with this. Other then that she was in great health and the Dr. was very happy with her. And no shots this time, which made the visit less stressful for me!
“Talker Betty Crocker”
That is our current nickname for Ella. In the last few weeks or so she has definitely gotten further into the “Language Explosion” that I have read about in my books. It is just incredible—I never stop feeling a moment of shock, disbelief, and then incredible pride every time I hear a new word. For the record, I am going to list some of her words:
Words she’s known for a while: Kitty cat (first word), doggy, mama, dada, baby, hat, ball, hi, eye, bye, up, bottle, water, woof woof, moo, binky, cookie, fish, boot, yeah
Words she’s picked up recently: Door, slide, sock, cook, Nami (my mom), beep beep, car, bear, bird, more, book, ear, teeth, Elmo, apple, tail, Coco (our dog), girl
Her most recent word, poop, is the most exciting since she did it while pointing to her diaper (and, yes, it WAS full). A sign for potty training! I know, not yet, not yet, but it’s nice to dream….
New Picture On Line!
We finally got a new Printer/Scanner/Copier!! I am very excited about this for many reasons but the one that is relevant here is that I have been able to update Ella’s website. Definitely drop by to check out the little cutie pie in ‘real life’. I am hoping to update it fairly regularly. I definitely don’t take as many pictures of her as I did her first year but I am trying to catch most of the major moments before she is all grown up on me. So, without further ado, the address is:

“Might as well jump”
The other day Ella was literally lurching herself all over the house. I mean, going down into a crouch then bursting up and doing a weird kick with one leg (while the other one was still firmly on the ground). After much head scratching (and some snickering) Jamie and I figured out that she was trying to jump. Very funny. Then we all started jumping around the living room and Ella was so happy with us. She started laughing out loud as we all jumped together. Talk about good clean fun! Anyhow, lately she’s been a jumping (or at least bouncing) fool. Still not leaving the ground but loves to throw herself up and down on the bed, the couch, and most fun, my lap. I’ll tell you, that little peanut can land pretty hard!
Ella also got her first shiner this week. I have to admit, we weren’t too concerned when it happened since it really didn’t seem like that big of a fall. She only cried for maybe a minute or so. But then a little egg grew about half an inch from her left eye, right in front of our eyes. It was weird; I had never seen that happen before. In any case, the next day it was bruised but the day after that was much worse. The little dime size bruise had grown to the size of a quarter but also her entire eye was all black and blue. She looked like a prizefighter! It is healing up okay but very embarrassing when we are out in public as it is quite noticeable. Many people stare and a few have asked about it. Well, I just smile, embarrassedly explain what happened and hope they know that this is how kids can get…
Well, that’s about all for this week! Thanks for reading!
