Bonnie's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

Every minute

I entitled this entry as I did since that has been my favorite phase lately. “Every minute”, as is “She gets cuter every single minute”. It’s true too. I thought that now that she was out of the roly-poly baby phase the cuteness might level off but I swear to you that every single MINUTE that I live with this girl she is getting cuter and cuter. I know that in the past I have posted entries complaining about the ‘terrible twos’ but I would now like to officially go on record saying that I absolutely love this age. It is so cute that sometimes I think my heart is going to melt right in my chest and ooze out of my body. I can’t remember where it was, but somewhere recently I remember hearing the phrase “If she were any cuter, she’d be a puppy". That’s right. She is THAT CUTE.

The main thing that really boosts her cute factor is her speech. The things that come out of this child’s mouth are so cute that they just cannot be captured with my lame typing skills. I just wish I could capture some of her monologues on video tape. And I would try, too, except that the moment the camera comes out she stops whatever she is doing to make a beeline for me so she can watch herself. Very frustrating, let me tell you!

So, instead, I will try to record some of her ramblings, but trust me, they are so much cuter when they chirp out of her fat little cheeks, and every other 'R' and 'L' sound is replaced with a 'W' sound instead.
“Ozzy bear, would you like to go for a ride in my carriage? You do? Oh, okay. First I am going to cover you up with my soft blanket. MOMMY!!! I’M GOING TO COVER HIM WITH MY SOFT BLANKET!!! Okay. Here you go, Ozzy Bear. Now you will be niiiiiiiiiice and waaaaaaaaaarm. Okay. Ready, let’s go. Do you want to go to the kitchen to get a snack? Oh yes, that would be wonderful!!! MOMMMMMY! I NEED TO GET A ‘NACK FOR OZZY BEAR!!! What would you like to eat, Ozzy bear? We have Panda Puffs, Cheerios, and Shredded Wheat…. MOMMY!!! Can you get some... some.... some....Panda Puffs for Ozzy Bear? Here you go, Ozzy Bear. I will feed you a Panda Puff. Do you like that… Oh, yes, it tastes soooooooooooo yummy. Thank you for giving me a Panda Puff.”

On and on she will go, with these running monologues. Another cute one is when she gives one of her animals a check up. It goes along the same pattern with a medical slant, involving an animal (except for Ozzy Bear she has named almost every single one of her animals Didi) being sick, needing a shot and medicine, and eventually Didi feels muuuuuuch better.

And singing? This girl will sing the day away. Really, is there anything cuter then a tiny toddler just going about her daily business singing all the way? Sometimes it’s songs that I have taught her or play for her but a lot of the time these songs seem to come out of nowhere. Some must be from day care and then I recognize some from television shows or videos. The other day after hearing that Outkast song “hey yeah” she was going around the house singing. “Shake it… shake it… shake it….”

Other times she will take traditional songs but add in her own little flare, such as this take on “Mary had a little lamb”
Mary had a shi shi mama, shi shi mama, shi shi mama
Mary had a shi shi mama
Her fleece was white as shi shi mama!

Here are some she learned at school that I had never heard before

One little apple sitting in a tree, teasing Mr. Winkey Worm,
You can’t catch me!!! You can’t catch me, (for this part she makes a teasing face)
Along comes Mr. Winkey Worm, quiet as can be (this line is whispered)
And CRUNCHED that apple right out of that tree (Big yell and hand motion for crunched)

Row row row your boat, Gently down the stream
If you see an alligator, don’t forget to scream. AHHHHHHHHHH (I don’t know why they would want to teach a whole classroom a song that involves screaming but that’s their priority. It is funny when she is singing this one over and over because often she will murmur so softly we aren’t sure what she is saying but when a little scream erupts every few minutes I know this is her song of the moment).

Sticky sticky sticky stick Bubble gum, bubble gum
Sticky sticky sticky stick Bubble gum
Sticks to my hands, sticks to my….. What it stick to mama?
(Here I choose something like her nose or the table or her shoe and she does the appropriate hand gesture)
So I pull it… and I pull it…. And I pull it!!!!

Getting in touch with her inner emotions
Another (yes, there’s more) so so cute thing that Ella has been doing lately is identifying her emotions for us. My mom, aunt Judy and cousin Emma came for the night (we all went to the North End for Italian and then to an improv show while Jamie stayed home). When they rushed her she stopped them at the door and explained “I’m being shy right now”. Other times, when she is feeling more up to it (this is when she is approaching strangers in stores with ‘Hi! What’s your name?’) she will explain to me “I’m being friendly right now”.

She is also very interested in her reasons for crying. Whenever she has a crying fit, after things are blown over she will usually announce why she was upset. “I cwied because mommy yelled at me.” Or “I cwyed because I didn’t want mommy to turn off the TV.” "I cwyed because I fell down". This morning when I dropped her off at daycare she went to all of her teachers and explained to them “I cwyed because I didn’t want to come to school today.” They didn’t have much to say to that one, aside from some half hearted sympathy that trailed off awkwardly. Heh heh..

She is also very in tune with when she is tired, and adamant about getting this taken care of. When she is being fussy around bedtime, she will immediately admit upon questioning that, yes, she is tired. Thereafter she usually wants to go to bed as soon as possible. Bedtime story, Ella? “No, I’m too tired right now” Oh, ummm, okay, well, do you want to say goodnight to daddy. “I’m just too tired Mommy” Ummm, okay then… well… goodnight, I guess “Mommy?” yes? “Don’t let Coco come in my bedroom tonight while I sleep” And that’s that!

Bonnie’s book reviews
Unless—Can’t remember who wrote this one and I don’t care too much since I thought it was pretty boring. It had an interesting premise, about a woman coping with her daughter’s decision to live on the streets, but just never got me into it. Just didn’t care about any of the characters and didn’t care what happened (which wasn’t much, believe me).
Midwives (Chris Bohjalian)- This is actually the second time I have read (listened to) this book but it has a lot more significance now that I have given birth, been a mother, and gotten to know and listen to the conversations of a number of previous and would be home birthers. As before, I absolutely loved this book. Chris Bohjalian is by far one of my favorite authors. His stories are always fascinating, his characters are likable, believable and flawed, and his writing is wonderful too. The books I have read by him, in order of my favorites, are: Midwives, Tran Sister Radio, Water Witches, The Law of Similars, and Buffalo Soldier. Every single one is a great read that I would recommend.

As always, thanks for reading.
Bonnie
