Becky's Diary EntriesDiary Navigation: |
March 24, 2003
I don't know about everywhere else, but it was a BEAUTIFUL weekend in Virginia! The sun was shining and it was warm, and it looked awesome from a HOSPITAL WINDOW! Ok, so I'm stretching the truth saying that we spent all weekend there, but 6 hours in the ER feels like an eternity. Let me back up some.... Makayla's been sick for approx. 3 weeks. On and off - ear infection and fever. She'll get better for a day or two and then get sick again. Frustrating to say the least. As of Friday, she's been to the doctor 4 times, and started her 4th antibiotic! NOTHING WAS HELPING! So, the last antibiotic was Zithromax and the doc was sure this would do the trick. Sunday morning, she woke up w/ a fever of 104.9!!! No, it wasn't working!!! I paged the doc on call and she said to go to Patient First and get some antibiotic shot. So, we went to Patient First right away. I paid a $35 copay for him to say "if 4 antibiotics haven't worked, my 1 isn't going to do anything. She needs to be seen at the ER." My poor little darling!!!!! So, off to the ER we go. The wait is approx. 3 1/2 hours to be seen. Makayla had only a low grade fever at this time and was ACTING fine, so we (Russell and I) said we would go home, and see how she is. Maybe the Zithromax is finally working! We went home and took a little nap. The only bit of rest I've had in days! When we woke up, she had a fever of... you guessed it... 104. AGAIN! This time she wasn't acting fine at all.... she was totally lathargic and just wanted Mommy. So, we packed a bag, and went to the Pediatric ER at St. Mary's - they're GREAT, by the way. We only had to wait about 30 minutes, and went back to our room. The doctor there looked in her ear and said she had a very bad ear infection (DUH!), he wanted to do blood work, and give her an IV w/ an antibiotic. My mom and Russell were both there with us, and they said for the blood work, only one of us could stay. So, Mommy stayed. Mommy is the wall that cannot be broken... the ship that cannot sink... the invincible woman!!!! She was braver than I was!! I THINK NOT! The two nurses started to do the IV in her right hand, and it "wasn't cooperating" (like I'm supposed to know what that means!) so they switched and did the bloodwork. All the while Makayla is SCREAMING and blood is pouring everywhere b/c the nurse doing it isn't the most experienced. It was all I could do to say "GET OFF MY DAUGHTER AND LEAVE HER ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" At the sight of the blood, I began to get dizzy and yes, I blacked out. Luckily I caught myself and sat down very fast.... but the worst was yet to come. (I feel the need to start a new paragraph - this one is getting too long!)
THEN, next to the left hand for the IV! She knew what was happening this time, so as soon as they touched her hand, she started screaming. This one was just as bad for her, but because of the lack of blood shown, I did better. By the way, if my description was too graphic I apologize. Once the evil nurses left, I picked up and held my little angel until she calmed down and stopped crying. She wouldn't let me put her down for about 30 minutes. I felt so bad for her... All I wanted to do was take away her pain and put it on myself!!!!!
Long story short = she was given an IV with the antibiotic and liquids for a few hours, and the blood work came back... the infection had somehow spread to her bloodstream. =( I felt (and continue to feel) just helpless... it's the worst feeling! PLUS I'm at work today and not with her!!! Because I'm fairly new at my job I only have a little bit of time. Every time I accumulate it, I have to use it for a drs appt here, or something else there. Luckily my mom is taking good care of her. I'm taking a 1/2 a day tomorrow to take her to the ear nose and throat dr that did her tubes. This is the first time we've had any problems with her ears in a year. (Tubes put in last March.) So, we'll see what he says. I'm REALLY sorry if I've been babbling, but I've been so overwhelmed and it was such a traumatic experience for both of us that I don't even know how to describe it.
An update on the marriage situation... it's been exactly 2 weeks and we're doing great. We went to counseling last Wednesday and we're going again this week. Things couldn't be better and I'm so excited!!! Well, I'm at work and I have to go, but don't forget to leave me a msg on the board! Again, I'm sorry if this was long and babble-like, but hopefully it was understandable! Love you guys!
God Bless,
Becky and Makayla
