10-24-03 Owen is 3 weeks and 3 days old. Everything is status quo.
Sleeping and Breastfeeding. Owen is still sleeping no more than 3 hours at the longest. But, he does stay up less in the middle of the night, when he wakes up. We found that if I pumped before bed, it enabled us to have a bottle which he drinks faster, thus reducing his awake time. He also can drink it while half asleep. If I breast feed him in the middle of the night, he can't help but fall asleep shortly after he latches on. And then he never gets enough milk and won't sleep as long. It also helps me to pump so I don't overflow until about his 7 am feeding. I'm surprised that I am making more milk than I did with G. I can consistently pump 3-4 ounces each night which makes me happy. Owen seems to latch on better than I ever remember G doing. Breastfeeding is much easier this time.
Diapers. Although at home I am primarily using cloth diapers. I do try to strategically put paper diapers on when I think he's going to poop. I had bought newborn diapers and a pack with the belly button cut out. That was a WASTE of money. It wasn't until my niece gave me the next size up diapers that I realized the newborn diapers were too small. Owen pees through cloth diapers at night. I was changing him 3 times each night, wondering if it had to do with his sleeping problems. And then I tried the newborn diapers, same problem and several wet nighties. So, then I tried the pampers. They fit better and they hold tons more liguid. Those newborn diapers are useless for a 9 lb baby. So, now, I have a big bag of diapers that I can't use.
G is still the exemplary brother (even if his being a son has become more disruptive). G loves Owen more than I could've imagined. He wants to help me do everything with him. If Owen is crying he yells at me to give him a bottle so he can feed him. He loves to kiss him and look at his eyes. He wants to sing to him and touch him all the time. He's very protective of his brother. The other night, Ron took Owen out of the room in the middle of the night to try and let me sleep. He had been out of town the night before and both boys were up the night before and I was exhausted. So, Owen was crying in the living room and G starts walking down the stairs in the middle of the night saying "I get him, daddy." He wanted to help. He did stay up with Ron for an hour watching tv and "helping."
G really is a great ideal child. He has been a bit obstinate with us lately and we've had to be a bit more stern but I know it's just temporary.
