Yesterday, Sunday, was G's birthday. He was 3. On Saturday, we went up to the mall and had lunch where G's sisters work. The California Pizza Kitchen. They have a kids club and he got a coupon for a free lunch on his birthday. K was working and we had her as our waitress and N showed up for her afternoon shift about 45 minutes after we got there. We took a few presents with us. He opened a new ball hat, a new batman book, and a counting book with animal figurines and a playmat. He loved that the best. He liked his book alot too. (I found him cutting the pages with my wavy scrap book sissors last night.) After lunch, we walked around the mall and went to the Disney store which G loves. He calls it the Mickey Mouse Store. I picked up a few things for his birthday party and then we went to the sporting goods store so I could get some new ski stuff for my trip tomorrow.
Sunday, since that was his real birthday, we sang to him when he woke up and took him to get a hotdog and fries for lunch. We stopped off at home depot and Lowes and Michaels craft store. When we got home, I let him open a few gifts from other people. My mom sent him some clothes, batman stuff, and candy. My niece (his godmother) gave hm a great book, It's a Scary Disney Storybook. We read 2 of the stories to him last night.
In 2 weeks, we are having a real birthday party. Last year and the year before we invited family down to our house. This year, I invited all the kids in his daycare class (8 of them) and 2 neighbors and 4 cousins. I got balloons already, and a pinata, favors and candy. I have tried several times to win a special cake pan off of Ebay but I keep getting outbid. It's the 1966 (or 64) batman emblem cakepan. Twice it has gone over $30. They are very hard to find and there isn't one up for bid right now. I guess I'll make one and just decorate it by hand. But, I really wanted it. If anyone has one, I'll buy it from you.
G has learned several things in the last week. He has figured out how to open the refrigerator as well as the car door. It's great now, because he will go to the fridge adn come back with grapes or his cup of milk, or a container of yogurt or pudding. I need to buy more things now and put them on the bottom shelf for him. Opening the card door is also very helpful. He can open it from the inside and out. It's a minivan. Now, that I've got Owen, G can help by opening the doors for all of us. He always says "I get bigger." And now he can also see that for himself. Yesterday we had a talk and we told him that now that he is 3 he has to be bigger and let us know more often when he has to go to the bathroom. He's real close to being 100% potty trained but has accidents. He agreed he would try harder and several times he told us he had to go. That made me happy. We have his 3 year appt on the 30th and he'll have to get shots.
Owen - well, I had tried everything the doctor told me to do to cure his cold which was not much. He gave me antibiotics...for what? He told me that it would help to keep him from getting an ear infection. That didn't help. He gave him some medicine to help with the stuffed nose which kind of helped. Also, I got some vapor stuff for teh humidifier. He just wasn't kicking the cold. He has had it since before Thanksgiving - so like 2 months. So, last week, I went to the health food store and explained to the person there the situation. She gave me some stuff that has bacteria in it since the amoxicillin killed all the bacteria in his belly, good and bad. This puts the good ones back. Also, i got this natural elderberry stuff that is good for colds and viruses. And I have to say that he is tons better. It's all natural and his body is responding well. He doesn't cough and his nose is almost cleared up. He slept well (for him) last night, only waking twice. I am very happy I did it. I wish I had done it sooner. The doctor had tried to make me feel guilty for sending my kid to daycare. But, in actuality, he got it before he started daycare and he isnt' around more than 3 other infants. They are all his age so they aren't sharing the same bed, or touching each other and are in a special room away from the other kids. So, at the moment, both of my kids are healthy!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah!!!! Oh, and my husband and I are healthy too. Owen is smiling so much now. He is such a morning person. I don't know if I ever mentioned he has a little birthmark on the right side of his face. It's a little brown splotch not quite a 1/4." He got it at about 2 weeks old. But, I wanted to mention it since this diary is for both my boys. He loves his exersaucer and loves the tv. In the mornings after both boys are dressed. I need a few minutes uninterrupted and I put on the Tweenies or the Wiggles and both my boys sit out and stare at the tv. G usually starts on the couch, then ends up on the floor by Owen. He loves his brother very much. Owen is grabbing at toys and other objects and eats alot. He'll drink about 24 ounces or more a day. He is a happy baby.
Scrappbooking. I swore I'd not get involved in this because it can take up so much time. Last year I copied and rewrote my diaries in word and reformatted each entry. I printed them on vellum and spray mounted them to some special 12 x 12 paper. I them put the sheets 81 of them into a book and they turned out nice. I didn't add any photos, just the diary. Then I thought about it and remembered how my mom has through the years taken photos out of her photo albums to make albums for each of us kids. 1 when we got married and 1 when we turned 40. I still haven't gotten mine yet. Mom has 9 kids and I guess she's been busy. Anyway, I noticed that the photo albums were all messed up and some of the pages were ripped and the photos were loose. So, I went and grabbed about 10 over the weekend while mom is in Florida for teh winter. I bought the Life's Journey book and several items to help put all those photos back into a nice viewable format. I'm not going to spend tons of time on them but I know it will look nice. I did 8 pages over the weekend. I'd say there are 6-8 photos on each page depending on the theme and time frame. She had started 2 weeks after my oldes sister was born (49 1/2 years ago). I have done 1 year now - 49 to go! IT will go quicker once I get to the books that have 2 pictures left on each page. This early book that I started with, mom hadn't taken many photos out yet. I like seeing my dad young. I do miss him and sometimes can't believe he's gone. This endeavor will take quite some time. I hope to get at least 1/2 of the photos done (the first 15 years) by September, for Mom's birthday. I don't know how many pages it will take yet and how many book's I'll have to buy. I know mom will like it. Also, I don't want to do any after I was born (1969) unless I know she's taken out those photos already. I may never do more than one book if this one takes so long.
Mom is in Florida right now. She is in the Tampa condo and preparing to sell it to my brother and sister. She is then buying one in Naples so that she can be closer to my brother who lives there. Now that dad is gone, she doesn't want to be far from family. She is coming back next weekend for a board meeting for a few days and then she'll be back again at then end of February or so.
Work - Nothing has changed at work right now. But, we are really close to getting a new contract. If we get that contract it will be a big one and it may give my husband the opportunity to break off from the branch we are in and have hs own division. If that's the case, then we talked about selling the house and moving closer to Louisville, specifically, to the land my left left my/us. I have 8+ acres (total 80 divided among 9 of us) that we always called "the farm." It's all wooded and unfortunately land locked. I'd be the first in the family to build on it so it would be expensive to get a roud built through someone else property to get to it. But, once there I would like to build a big log and stone home. It is still only 15 minutes to my mom's house and 20 to the Kentucky border. So, we could move a branch of the company to my hometown. That way we can hire out of the Louisville populous. We are keeping our fingers crossed. Apparently, my brother in Owensboro is thinking of doing the same thing. He has applied for several positions (he's an anesthesiologist) in the area and has many leads. I think that's enough for today.
Anne, G and Owen (becoming known as "O" in the family)
