Really that boring

February 16, 2007

We couldn't figure out why Cai wasn't sleeping. We took him on outings. We played. He ran in circles around our house. He rides his bike (training wheels on, of course) around and around our living room/dining room/kitchen/foyer circle until I threw up my hands at the state of our hardwood. And still he was waking up 3 or 4 times a night. Then this semester my husband and I (did I mention we decided to go to counseling?) had incompatible schedules, and our last sitter decided to pull all of her children--all 4 of them-- out of school to homeschool them, so she was out. We checked out the child care center at the community college at which I teach. Not only is it two minutes away from my office, it's also geared for ages 2-5, and includes a head start program once the kids turn three. There are no infants, and no really big kids. Whew. Cai loved it when we took him to see it and he didn't want to leave. Plus they have a cute little toddler-sized real potty and a real small sink! Perfect for my little man, who is just getting used to being potty trained.

The first day there were some tears.  Ben and I went together, and he clung to us for twenty minutes, sniffling the entire time.  I made sure to pick him up early.

Two days later when I brought him again, he hugged me and ran off.  Since then, about 5 weeks now, there have been no tears.  In fact, he usually dances into his classroom before I've finished signing him in.  When I pick him up he's always had a long nap (how do they get him to do that?) and are usually playing with Floam or musical instruments or having a birthday party for one of the kids in his class.  Sometimes he doesn't want to leave!

He's sleeping through the night now.  It must be the stimulation of the other kids and the new activities.  I'm very happy that I can sleep for more than two hours in a row at night.  But a small, mommy part of me is very sad.

Was I that boring?
