Making Potty Training Fun
Activities to Get Kids Interested in Potty Training
By Kelly Burgess
When Laura Watson needed to get her laid back middle child to start training, these are some of the tricks she used:
- The Potty Soldiers: Watson's son was not interested in potty training dolls or stuffed bears, so the two of them created a barracks out of empty cereal boxes for his toy soldiers – complete with a small potty that had once contained a side order of salad dressing. Before each mission, everyone used the potty.
- Sitting and Singing. To keep her son sitting and interested while he was on his potty chair, Watson would bring a portable cassette player in and they would sing along with the music and do finger plays.
- Hand-Washing Technique. Watson has used this technique with all her children. As they wash hands they sing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.&rd It takes exactly 20 seconds to sing one verse, which is the amount of time recommended for a good hand-washing. It teaches proper hygiene in a fun way.
- Puppets and Potties. One day on a whim, Watson stuck a couple of bath puppets on her hands while they were in the bathroom and acted out their potty adventure. Her son loved it and it seemed to help remind him of why they were there.
