Making Potty Training Fun
Activities to Get Kids Interested in Potty Training
By Kelly Burgess
Just as no two children are exactly alike, no two children potty train the same way. And that applies even to children in the same family!
Laura Watson, of Harrison, N.Y., has three children, ages 8, 6 and 4. All are now out of diapers, but her experience potty training each of them was vastly different. Her oldest, Amanda, trained easily – she almost trained herself. The second child, Joey, wasn't really interested in potty training, but wasn't against the idea either. He needed a little more patience and modeling. The youngest did not think potty training was a priority at all and wasn't completely trained until he was nearly 4.
"I laugh when I hear people say stuff like, 'If you just wait until they're ready they'll train without any problem,'" Watson says. "That may be true for some kids, but it's not true for others. If I'd let my two youngest just wait until they decided they were ready, I believe at least one of them would still be wearing diapers."
Watson got the idea for incentives from her daughter – the one who virtually trained herself. Shortly after Amanda turned 2, they were out shopping and Amanda spotted a pair of frilly underwear. She begged for them, but her mom told her they were for little girls who didn't wear diapers.
"I wasn't even thinking potty training at the time, I was just stating a fact," Watson says. "But she told me that she really wanted them and if she got them she wouldn't wear diapers any more."
