Is My Toddler Ready for Toilet Training?
Your score was between 11 and 17!
Your child might not be ready to begin full-blown toilet training. This doesn't mean you can't tell your toddler about the potty chair or toilet, and you can certainly read him books about the process. Just remember that the age at which a child is ready to train varies widely. Some children are ready at 18 months while others, especially boys, may not be ready until they are nearly five years old.
Some signs of readiness to look for in the coming months are:
- regular bowel movements
- staying dry for a period of two hours or more, or during a nap.
- your toddler wants to follow your instructions and wants to be "part of the group."
- your toddler notices when he is soiling his diaper or asks to be changed.
- your toddler shows interest in the potty chair or toilet.
Talk to your pediatrician about your child's signs of readiness and don't give in to pressure from peers or family members. If you push your child too soon, he may develop a fear of the process. See the article "Toilet Training: Is My Child Ready?" for more information.
