Fun Ways to Decorate and Create a Kid-friendly Space

While this is a time when children are beginning to form interests or develop a sense of style, parents will want to find a balance when decorating the room in a particular theme.

At this age, the child's interest often changes every few months. A princess room might be your toddler's dream one week, but the next week, she might refuse to go near her room because she loves dinosaurs and hates princesses.

"Include a theme, but do it sparingly," Luthringshausen says. Use basic furniture, but add easy-to-remove and -replace wall hangings or decals.

The most important thing to remember when putting the finishing touches on a toddler's room is to make sure it is a place the child enjoys spending time. If your child enjoys books, take a corner and create a reading nook with big pillows and a small book shelf. Make sure there is plenty of empty floor space for active play. And at night, the bed should be easy to get in and out of and a comfortable, inviting place to sleep.

When They Have a Roommate

Not every child has the luxury of having his or her own room, and your toddler may have to share. Kiki Luthringshausen of Lincolnshire, Ill., had twins who shared a room.

To keep harmony in the room while allowing each child to have her own space and personal touches, Luthringshausen recommends the following:

  • If the room is large enough, give each child a small dresser.
  • Create a reading and quiet space for each child that is off limits to the other.
  • Havea bulletin board for each child to display their artwork or special pictures.
  • Go with neutral wall coloring and carpeting, but let each child pick individual bedspreads. There is no rule that says everything in the room must match!
