Summer's Outdoor Hazards
Tips to Keep Tots Safe
By Shannon McKelden
The fuel necessary to run this equipment is also a hazard. "Gasoline and its vapors are extremely flammable," says Drago, who is also the author of From Crib to Kindergarten: The Essential Child Safety Guide (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2007). "Vapors can travel a long way along the ground (gasoline vapor is heavier than air), and can be ignited by any open flame, including the pilot light on water heaters, any spark, including friction, and any other ignition source."
Gasoline should be stored in a locked area, off limits to children and away from gas water heaters, furnaces or other ignition sources. Lawn chemicals such as fertilizers should also be locked up where children cannot come in contact with them.
"Teach kids, starting at a young age, to stay away from the grill and how to act safely while someone is grilling," Soloway says. Of course, a parent should never assume these lessons will be remembered and should never leave a child unsupervised.
Drago also reminds parents that multipurpose lighters, though required to be child-resistant, are not guaranteed to be childproof. "Toddlers are great imitators, so light grills when children are not with you, and store the lighters out of chidren's reach," she says.
