Helping Toddlers Build
Healthy Sleep Habits

Helping your toddler prepare for sleep, then letting her make the final drift into dreamland on her own, should offer better rest for both of you, says Dr. Mindell. "It really is better for toddlers' health and their sleep to learn to fall asleep independently."

Healthy Habits for Moms and Dads

Parenting a toddler can be both exhilarating and exhausting. To get the rest you need, try these tips:

  • Stick to a schedule. To help set your own internal clock, try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, even on the weekends.
  • Cut the caffeine. Caffeine-containing products (such as coffee, chocolate and colas) maintain their stimulant effect for three to five hours, on average. Some people may be affected even 12 hours later. For better rest, try curbing your caffeine intake about six to eight hours before bedtime.
  • Make your bedroom a haven. You'll sleep best in a room that's quiet, dark, cool and comfy. Make sure your mattress and pillows are in good condition, and if lights or noise are problematic, consider solutions such as white noise machines or blackout curtains. And find a new resting place for the TV, computer and the work you brought home from the office bedrooms are best used exclusively for sleep and sex.
