We're Going to the Zoo
Celebrate National Zoo and Aquarium Month with Your Toddler
By Melinda Copp
The SEA LIFE LEGOLAND Aquarium in Carlsbad, Calif., is opening its doors this summer and will offer an educational and interactive underwater experience for kids with 72 new models built from LEGO bricks and creatures native to California waters. Families can stroll through an acrylic tunnel and be submerged in the ocean environment without getting wet. An interactive discovery zone offers kids the opportunity to interact with experts, touch tide pool creatures and build their own coral reef out of LEGO bricks. For more information, visit them at www.legoland.com.
The Downtown Aquarium in Houston offers several year-round and summer programs for kids, including a Sea Sarfari Camp that teaches kids about the animals and environments in which they live, and Explor-Oceans Camp that covers the more scientific side of nature, teaching kids about the ocean floor, geologic events and water chemistry. They also offer behind-the-scenes programs, such as Zoologist for a Day and Marine Biologist for a Day, that show kids what it's like to work with the animals. For more information, visit them at www.downtownaquarium.com.
The Louisville Zoo in Kentucky features several special exhibits and programs kids will love, including the Calistoga Splash Park at Glacier Run where kids can cool off and camp-outs where families can stay overnight in the Gorilla Forest. Plus, this year, the zoo's baby elephant is celebrating his first birthday. For more information, visit them at www.louisvillezoo.org.
