We're Going to the Zoo
Celebrate National Zoo and Aquarium Month with Your Toddler
By Melinda Copp
Planning a summertime activity that everyone in the family will enjoy can be tricky, but heading to the zoo or aquarium is truly fun for all.
"I just took my nephew and goddaughter to the Bronx Zoo and had a wonderful time," says Michelle Abril, a resident of New York City. "I had not been there since I was in middle school and it was such a fulfilling experience seeing it through the kids' eyes."
Zoos and aquariums offer exotic wildlife, exciting interactive exhibits and a chance to see other parts of the world. June is National Zoo and Aquarium Month, and the perfect opportunity for you to show your little ones the world of wildlife and have fun with the whole family.
"Visiting the zoo connects families to wildlife – most of us don't get to travel, and the zoo is a chance to get up close with polar bears and African wild dogs," says Margie Marks, Curator of Conservation Education for the Pittsburgh Zoo in Pennsylvania. "These animals are ambassadors to their wild cousins."
Regardless of where you live, you're sure to have a zoo or aquarium close by, and they are a low-budget attraction that can be added to your family vacation plans. For some of the best zoos and aquariums for kids, consider the following locations.
The Audubon Zoo and Aquarium in New Orleans offers something for every member of the family with more than 700 different species of animals from around the world, the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit, an IMAX Theatre and a new Insectarium opening this summer. They also offer numerous kids programs for all ages, including Toddlers at Ten, Summer Camp, Parent's Night Out, Safari After Dark campouts and Bug Club.
