world by introducing analogies, simple science, geometry and even sign language," says Santomero.

Certainly, she says, her own life experience has helped contribute to the evolution of the program. "When I first became pregnant was when I came up with the idea of incorporating a 'family' theme into a series of episodes," says Santomero. The result was a series of episodes in which one of the characters, Mrs. Pepper, becomes pregnant with her second child and helps prepare the family for a new addition. Now, she says, she is just amazed when her daughter, now nearly 2 years old, watches and participates in the Blue's Clues episodes. "It's one thing to be passionate about your work and hope that you're doing a good job," she says. "But to see your own child actually putting it all together and really getting it and learning from the program, well, that just blows us away."

Johnson also has taken inspiration from parenthood and says that seeing her preschool-age son, T.J., interact with the show is the greatest reward. Johnson is in fact the voice of "Blue" the main character, which brings a special element into her son's Blue's Clues experience. "I was with him one day watching the show, and he pointed at Blue and said, 'Mama,'" Johnson says. "Though I'd like to think he knew it was my voice, I think my husband taught him to do that!"

At the end of the day, both Johnson and Santomero love what they do and feel great knowing that they are creating something valuable and educational. "TV is a part of life, and we want to make sure that what we put out there can help educate and nourish," says Johnson.
