Part Two

  • Dogs: Strange dogs may or may not be good with young children. Teach children that you have to ask the owner before you pet or approach a dog that you don't know.
  • Safety equipment: Wear helmets for activities that could cause head injury, like inline skating and bicycling. A toddler should wear a helmet even in a bike seat or trailer. Use other safety equipment such as knee pads and elbow pads. Wrist guards should be used by inline skaters, who are especially prone to arm injuries and wrist fractures.
  • Hot tubs and pools: Keep hot tubs and pools locked. Some hot tubs have latches that can be buckled shut or locked. Otherwise, fence the pool or hot tub and install a locking gate.
  • Clotheslines: Be careful about clotheslines or loose ropes hanging from trees. These can pose a strangulation hazard.
  • Safe play equipment: Make sure you have wood chips underneath swingsets or tree swings. If you have a climbing toy, make sure that it is no taller than six feet, and there are wood chips or soft rubber chips underneath it. Check your play equipment regularly to make sure it is in good repair (no frayed ropes, loose screws, wood that could splinter, etc.)
  • Lawn care equipment: Children should never be around lawn care equipment such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and edgers. Lawnmower blades could throw rocks and sticks at a dangerous speed, right at the height of a toddler's head. Children can also get caught under a mower. Toes and fingers can be severely injured by the cutting edges of lawn care equipment. Be a model yourself¾ use safety glasses, long pants, and shoes when you mow.
