Home, Safe Home

Part One

  • Poisons: Toddlers may surprise you with their ability to climb. My daughter (two years) pulled drawers out to use as steps onto any counter. Lock up poisons such as medicines, soaps, cosmetics, perfumes and colognes.
  • Kitchen

    • Microwave safety: Items coming out of the microwave can be very hot. Teach children to not use the microwave or to ask an adult to help take items out.
    • Garbage: Garbage can be hazardous. Use a locking pail or keep it locked under the sink.
    • Garbage disposal: Make sure garbage disposal can't be turned on from under sink.
    • Stove safety: Make sure your child can't turn on the knobs. If you have front knobs, use a guard or take the knobs off. Use only the back burners. Turn the front elements off or unplug them so you can't make a mistake. Turn handles of pans in so children can't grab them and tip the hot food onto themselves.
    • Cleaning supplies: Keep them locked in a cabinet, or better yet, use safer kitchen cleaners like baking soda and vinegar.
    • Safety latches: Install childproof latches on drawers or cabinets that contain hazards such as knives, cleansers, or electrical appliances.
    • Dishwasher safety: A toddler or child can fall onto upturned knives and forks in an open dishwasher. Turn these items point-down in a dishwasher.
    • Hot liquids: Put all hot liquids, including instant noodle cups and coffee well away from edges of counters or tables. Curious hands could pull them off and burn themselves.
