Creating Outside Fun for Babies and Toddlers

"This helps older infants to not explore their sense of taste!" Harren says.

What to Do?
Older infants and toddlers have many more opportunities when exploring the outdoors. One area that children can improve on while outdoors is gross motor development. "Simple activities such as kicking and throwing a ball, jumping and using riding toys will allow children to develop stronger muscles and coordination," Harren says.

There are many options for physical and creative outdoor play. Playing in water is possibly the definitive childhood summer activity. Whether jumping through a sprinkler, splashing in a kiddie pool or directing a garden hose, water can add a whole new dimension to summer fun. With proper supervision and a willing parent, water play can transform a sticky summer afternoon into a refreshing day of adventure.

Speaking of water play, why not let your toddler splash around in puddles after a warm summer rain? Puddle boots, a raincoat and a camera are the only things you need to create an afternoon of memories!

Bubbles are always a winning choice, especially for younger children. Amuse your infant by blowing bubbles that land on his skin, or challenge your toddler to catch the bubbles you blow before they escape her reach.

Sandboxes are another addition to summer amusement. Don't underestimate the thrill a child experiences in simply running sand through his fingers – or between his toes! This is especially true for older infants. Just be sure the touching doesn't become tasting! A sandbox is the perfect place to let a toddler's imagination run wild. Go beyond the usual pail and shovel and provide a wide variety of tools for your child to use. Measuring cups, cake pans and wooden spoons are an excellent place to start. Young children are fascinated by challenges to build castles, create roads, dig holes or draw pictures in the sand.
