Home Concerns
It's entirely possible to overheat a baby's room. "One of the causes for SIDS may be overheating," Steffy says. "While it's important that your baby doesn't get cold, you also need to be careful not to overheat your baby. We tend to overdress our babies in this society. It takes a newborn awhile to be able to regulate their body temperature. If the cheeks are pale and the skin looks mottled, they may be cold. If the neck feels damp or they have red cheeks, they may be too warm."

And be careful about how you heat your home. "Remember that electric space heaters in the home can be dangerous, and are a potential source of fire and burns, as well as carbon monoxide exposure, so they need to be monitored closely, especially if children play nearby," Dr. Krata says. "If you must use an electric space heater, purchase newer models, which include safety features like automatic shutoff and electronic temperature controls. And of course, always follow manufacturer's instructions."

Another concern, Steffy says, is wood stoves. "If you heat with a wood stove, the air can become very dry," she says. "It's best to have a cool mist humidifier to run. And keep in mind safety if you have a fireplace or stove. There are many products out there for safe-proofing the stove or fireplace."
