Getting Little Ones Prepped for Winter

The Great Indoors
While keeping little ones comfortable in the outdoors is important, remember your baby will spend more time inside than out, so it's essential to make sure your home is properly warmed.

"While at home, keep room temperatures around 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit," Dr. Krata says. "At night, you can keep temperatures as low as 65. If possible, keep the room humidified. For those homes with steam/hot water radiators, consider placing a bowl of water near the radiator to help humidify the room. And of course, take care to place the bowl out of reach of children."

Comfort in the Crib
When it comes to infant bedding, keep thick comforters out of the cribs of tiny ones. "Infant cribs should be kept free of comforters and sheep skins," Dr. Krata says. "Using a sleeper is a good idea if the room is too cold. If a blanket is used, the baby's feet should be to the foot of the crib and the blanket needs to be tucked under the mattress and only go up to the baby's chest. Always remember to put a baby on his or her back to go to sleep to help prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) or suffocation."

Steffy agrees that blankets really aren't ideal. Instead, she recommends something called a sleep sac. "This sac has no sleeves in it," she says. "Dress your baby in a onesie and a long sleeve romper and put the sleep sac on him or her. You can also put them in the onesie, gown and socks and then place him or her in the sleep sac. These sacs are designed to decrease the incidence of SIDS. But if you do use a blanket, make sure it is tucked in and Baby cannot pull it over their head."
