Health Hazards in Hiding

10 Things You Can Do Today to Raise a Healthy Child

Scraps of paper, crumbs and wrappings of lunches eaten on the run and remnants from the prior sports season often linger under the seats and floor mats of the family vehicle. These items can become lodged under the pedals of the car, launched in an attack on a sibling or accidentally ingested by young children.

Joy Freeman of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., found that a weekly cleaning of the excess items in your car helps everyone's ride be safe and smooth. If your children are intent on traveling with a few favorite items, books or craft supplies, purchase inexpensive mesh totes to hang on the back of the seat or slim plastic containers to slide under the seat. "Adopting the attitude that my kids must treat the vehicle similar to their bedroom and pick up what is played with after it's used resolved our problem of messy safety hazards while on the road," says Freeman.

10. Rethink Rehydration
Refrigerators filled with juice boxes, pouches and sodas, coupled with countless cups of caffeinated beverages served daily, do not promote healthy hydration for your family's busy bodies. The current recommendation for proper water consumption is eight 8-ounce glasses daily.

"Balancing healthy beverages such as water and those containing electrolytes with tasty favorites that are higher in sugar helps you fight illness, stay properly hydrated and feel energized," says Joan Knudson, a registered dietician and nutrition counselor from Arlington, Va.

Here's to your family's health!
