Patriotic Mountain Traditions
By Pam Prevatt Woll
The inn itself is a fabulous attraction. High Hampton lacks the commercialization of your typical resort. The smell of boxwood is as strong as it was in 1923 when the inn was first built. With the fresh mountain air, towering white oaks and the world's largest Fraser Fir tree, High Hampton is truly a hidden treasure.
This historic inn sits on a private, stocked lake surrounded by 1,200 acres. It features a beautiful 18-hole golf course, driving range, tennis courts, hiking and fitness trails and a colorful dahlia garden. This is such an inviting place with a wraparound porch of rocking chairs and a majestic four-sided fireplace inside with couches and game tables all around. There are television sets in the inn, but not in the cottages or rooms.
