Dear Santa...
What One Dad Hopes for This Christmas
By Mark Stackpole
So please don't let the lack of low-lying decorations fool you – we are eagerly awaiting your arrival. Oh, I'll apologize in advance for the fact that there are only crumbs where your cookies should be. And the half-empty milk glass that will undoubtedly have more cookie remnants floating around in it as well. Corinne takes it personally when "nummies" are left uneaten, and she certainly enjoys a cold glass of milk. Especially if it was originally someone else's, and she can leave those cookie fragments floating around in it, thus ensuring that it becomes hers. Crafty, these almost-2-year olds.
Who knew that the holiday spirit could cause such a mess. Decorations are no longer simply placed on a table or mantle and left there for the season; they are taken down, hugged, kissed, dropped and moved so that they might play with the other decorations. Light strands are no longer perfectly symmetrical, and we have to be very wary of where they are plugged in. Presents left under the tree are likely to be opened, and their contents broken, well before the special morning. And somehow, it seems like we never actually understood the meaning of holiday spirit until now. Watching our little miracles celebrate the season, even if it requires a little extra cleanup, is more than enough for us.
Well, except for the sleep. Please don't forget about the sleep.
Thanks and Merry Christmas,
Mark, Charlotte, Corinne and Lucas
