Too Many Chefs...
Help Mom at Thanksgiving by Entertaining the Kids
By I.J. Schecter
Take Your Chances
There is, of course, a third choice: involving your kids in Mom's culinary extravaganza. This is the riskiest option, but, if approached properly, the most potentially rewarding. If choosing this route, you must lay down clear ground rules and be confident your kids can adhere to them. In an infant's case, this may mean you're sure he can stay happily in his electric swing while she bastes. In the toddler's case, it might mean you can assure Mom the little one will follow instructions to the letter without trying to improvise. Toddlers are especially good at placing broccoli florets, carrots and celery on a platter for a healthy vegetable tray. "I know how good it makes my wife feel to put together an entire holiday meal, but I also know how much more enjoyable it is for her when the kids participate," says Darrel Lambert from New York, N.Y., father of 8-month-old Karie and 3-year-old Jack. "It makes Thanksgiving that much more special."
