Cultural Traditions
Celebrating Christmas Around the World
By Katherine Bontrager
It's surprising the number of traditions shared between Russia and the United States. The only real difference is that Christmas in Russia is celebrated on New Year's Eve, according to Nina Minasov, a Russian American who moved to the United States after spending most of her life in Russia. "We decorate the Christmas tree, wrap gifts in boxes and put them under the tree," says Minasov. "Some people invite Santa Claus, or Dedushka Moroz, into the house to pass out presents."
Family and friends gather and share a big dinner with a lot of pies, she says. But the pies are not just the sweet treats you'd find in the United States; pies with beef and fish are actually quite common. The festivities begin at 11 at night and last into the morning hours with everyone celebrating in the comfort of their homes.
