It's often said that men are harder to shop for than women. This is true because men, in addition to keeping their thoughts, feelings and opinions to themselves at the best of times, are particularly mum on the topic of what they'd like as a gift. As a public service to women, here are 8 gift ideas – plus one bonus – that will put a smile on any dad's face come the third Sunday in June.

1. A Round of Golf
Ask a few dozen fathers what they'd like best and you'll be surprised at the frequency of one answer: a round of golf. "I would want nothing except some free time to play 18 holes," says Eric Moncik, a father of two from Toronto, Canada. His comment echoes that of an increasing number of dads these days who enjoy heading out on the golf course because it offers a) time with the guys, b) being outdoors and c) five hours of doing nothing but smacking a little white ball around.

Golf equipment and gadgets can be just as good as the gift of a round itself. From club headcovers to bag tripods to a good old box of balls, there are virtually endless golf accessories you can find, any one of which will be happily accepted by even the most mediocre golfer.

2. Anything Sports-related
If your guy isn't as masochistically obsessed with golf as most men, don't worry, any sports-themed gift will likely do. "All I'd like for Father's Day are tickets to a ballgame," says Jeremy Diamond, a Canadian dad to 8-month-old Cassidy. "It's an easy gift, plus a nice reward for finally finishing the basement."

Reading about sports works just as well as watching it. "A subscription to Sports Illustrated, Men's Journal
