Halloween Spooktacular
Party Ideas That Won't Make You Batty! By Lori Bonner
!
Tombstones
In this game, guests try to guess who or what lies under imaginary tombstones. Before the party, write down the names of famous people, Halloween characters or various Halloween items and their description. For example, "Pumpkin: a large, edible, orange-yellow fruit that grows on a vine." You can use the dictionary to help you. Prepare as many words as you would like to use. To play, divide into two teams. One person should act as the announcer. The announcer says, as if reading a tombstone, "Here lies..." and then reads the description. Players yell out the word. The team with the first person to say the correct word gets a point. The team with the most points when the announcer runs out of words is the winner.
Witch's Finger
Take a shoebox and cut a hole in the bottom just large enough for someone's pointer finger to fit in. Place some cotton in the bottom of the box around the hole. Divide the guests into two teams. Place the shoebox on a table that has a table cover that extends to the floor. One team is seated in front of the table. The other team sits behind the table. One member of the hidden team pulls the shoebox off the table and places their finger in the hole. They hold the box up so that the finger inside it is visible to the other team. The other team takes a consensus and announces which member of the other team's finger it is. The finger is removed and another player puts a finger in the box. The opposing team again guesses the identity of the finger. After they have guessed on five fingers, the number of correct guesses is announced and the teams switch places. Magic Potions
Before the party, make buggy ice cubes by freezing a raisin in each cube. Mix one package of unsweetened purple drink mix with 1/2 cup sugar and place in a bowl. Label this as "Bat Wing Powder." Use several flavors/colors if desired. Affix new labels on beverage bottles and cans that read "Swamp Gas," "Dragon's Blood," "Juice of Slug," etc. (lemon-lime soda, grenadine syrup and tropical nectar, respectively). Other juices and syrups and additional flavors of soda can also be added to the selection. A bowl of gummy worms is a nice addition. At the party, provide each guest with a 16-ounce (or larger) clear plastic cup. Have the guests put some soda in their glass. Next they should add a spoonful of "Bat Wing Powder." The citric acid in the drink mix reacts with the soda by fizzing and foaming. Allow guests to add other ingredients as they choose. They can recite this spell before drinking their potions if they like:
