What Happens When Young Children Share a Bedroom?

Timing is also important when making a change to a bedroom or sleeping situation. "If parents plan to move their toddler out of a crib to make room for a new baby, it's best to do this a couple of months before the new baby is born so that the older child doesn't have to deal with too many changes at once and will be less likely to resent the new baby," says Dr. Shiller. Even the smallest amount of redecorating can be important, especially if made with input of the older sibling. Increasing a child's sense of ownership makes success more likely.
Her older son does have a separate room and "big boy bed" that he sleeps in whenever he wants, but he usually ends up in the family bed at some stage during the night. The boys take naps together, usually in the family bed. "I feel this builds a security in sleep patterns and a closeness between them as brothers," says Wales. "I see kindness and gentleness between them at naptime and bedtime that I don't see so much during the day. I think they will wind up much closer as a result."
