Keeping Clean

Is That Rubber Ducky Squeaky Clean?

By Valerie K. O' Berry

Pages:  1  2  3

  • Every two weeks, clean bath toys with bleach. Use one tablespoon of liquid bleach per gallon of water. Soak the toys for about two minutes, then air dry without rinsing them.
  • Here's a time saving tip: Mix the bleach solution in the tub, put the toys in a net bag and submerge them in the tub. This gets both toys and tub clean at the same time. If you have squeaking or squirting toys with holes, squeeze the bleach solution out of them several times, then rinse with water. Be sure you rinse well so your child does not get the solution in her mouth during her next bath.
  • Avoid using porous toys in the bath, such as wooden and spongy toys. And, don't use antibacterial soaps and solutions to clean toys because it's unnecessary.
  • "There's already a great deal of household phobia and people are going gonzo trying to sterilize their house. But, it's really not necessary. I don't think these products [antibacterial soaps, etc.] have made people any healthier and we may be shooting ourselves in the foot by using them because we are helping to create [antibiotic and disinfectant] resistant bacteria," Pomputius says.

Instead of worrying about bacteria and disinfecting everything, parents should make regular handwashing with ordinary soap a household habit, Pomputius says.

Keep the rubber duckie clean by shampooing it.
