Mistakes Even the Most Cautious Moms Can Make

"Remember, kids are resilient and life is long," Dr. Mayer says. "You will have plenty of parenting chances to teach these lessons to your child over their lifespan. Believe me, as a parent myself and as a psychologist who has helped raise thousands of kids over my professional career, it is amazing how opportunities for corrective learning will present themselves."

As They Grow

Another common problem parents encounter can occur when their child faces teasing or a problem with a teacher or other child. Not letting children stand up for themselves in the face of others, particularly in school-related issues, is a problem, according to Dr. John Mayer, a Chicago-based psychologist. He sees it as a common mistake that even cautious moms make. This is true especially when it comes to getting between the child and their teacher, when the child should ideally be accountable for themselves.

"Why does this happen?" Dr. Mayer says. "Because we love our kids and want the best for them. No matter how much we try and protect them from the bumps in life's road, this is a part of life, and it's important developmentally that they pick up those skills."
